Just my personal thoughts / speculations, but I do not think M27 prices have been rising as fast as M28 prices. In fact, I think they're getting to be pretty much in the same ballpark. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I bought a couple of 6" M28s in 2006. If I sold either one for $500 today, I would double my money. Allowing for inflation, I'd have to get $600, but still ...

LGS just acquired a 28-2 4-inch, blued. It's an N518XXX serial number that based on a member's earlier post would date it to 1978. Looks to be original, no alterations or refinishing and is in very nice condition. No holster wear or other indications that is has been carried or fired significantly. No box or papers.

Problem is, it is on consignment and (like all of us) the owner wants top dollar.

Looking at GB and other web sites like True Gun Values, prices are all over the place.

Stocks could be original. Asking is $1500!

Unfortunately, I have no photos at this time.

Any thoughts or other feedback will be appreciated!

Price to high!

You are not wrong. The premium for a Model 27 in the same condition is getting smaller. However, that may just indicate that the price of a Model 27 peaked a few years before the 28. Prices of guns showing clear signs of use only go so high. There are many Model 28's around, and people just move on to the next most popular gun they see discussed online. Just posting what a bargain a Model 28 is compared to a 27 makes more people want to buy the "bargain" gun.

I bought my 28-2 off of GB in April for $685 before taxes and shipping. It has a few small scratches on the cylinder, some holster wear right near the muzzle, turn marks on the cylinder, and Hogue rubber grips. No box or paperwork. That was almost the upper limit of my budget at the time, so I was fortunate to find it at that price.

It now sports more respectable Altamont target stocks!

I can't even remember what I paid for my first HP in 1977 anymore. I think it was $200, with a target trigger and a nice action job, along with a lot of holster wear. Last one I bought was in the box in almost perfect condition for $960, and didn't feel like I was being hosed on the price. So many things not made anymore go for big prices now..

The value of unmolested Model 28's has been rising faster than that of unmolested Model 27's, at least the blued Model 27's. I think the driving factor is that Model 27's are expensive N-frame 357's, the Model 28 has been far less expensive, making them more attractive to those who want to add an N-frame 357 to their collection. I doubt that the Model 28 will ever be of equal value to a similar condition Model 27, but they are getting closer.

Yesterday I stumbled across a transitional 28-2 4" with box and target stocks in a shop. It had the recessed cylinder but no pin for the barrel. In roughly 95% condition-only because it had been shot. Excellent timing/lockup. $550 plus tax/background check fee. Another ffl holder bought it. If I wasn't waiting on the Hi-Power I prepaid for it would've gone home with me-trying to be fiscally responsible for a change lol.

I have found almost any N frame is worth $500-$650. I started to move all my 28s that weren't 5 screw from my safe I priced them all at $800, This was 6 months ago. they ranged from 65% (exCop guns to 98%) sold them all within 2 weeks. I notice that Hi end guns around here are going for about $1200. You can pick up a M27 blued 6-8 3/8s for two or three hundred more and they are much slicker. All the 3 1/2 inchers (any model) are priced very high. Someone offered me $1500-$1600 for one of my 5 screws it would be gone in a heartbeat.

FYI I just noticed a M-27 and a M-28 for sale on this forum $1900 for both.

Sounds like you've thriving business. Most Smiths I buy to keep.

I paid $650 out the door for this 4" 28-2 six months ago at a small gun store.Although it appears to be unfired since leaving Springfield, there were very minor scratches on one side of the cylinder where the sight adjustment tool had rubbed up against it in the box. The cylinder scratches do not show up in my photos. And the box was filthy. Serial number N1520XX

About 15+ years ago the m28/6", m28-2/6" both in blue 99% condition was $695. At the sametime the m27-2/6" in blue or nickel was $795.
Asking $1,000 isn't that far off in 15+ years.
