Model 28 - FINALLY

Hey All...have been looking for decent M28 for quite a while now...most have been heavily used..that is not a bad thing but we all like as new as possible....right...??? Well this one turned up from a friend of a friend...he needed $$ to fund a new diesel pick up...$525..this one is stone cold MINT...
original box numbered to weapon...original S&W wrap paper...screwdriver but no sealed bag of cleaning tools...
1,000% blue - hardly a line on the cylinder....not a mark anywhere...
N171xxx...4" ...grips are numbered to the weapon also...i figure it has a born date around 1971...he says he bought it new...added the Tyler T grip...says he fired a cylinder full and placed it back in the box...i can believe that...
I totally dismantled it...i have the correct tools...it really was filthy inside...dried oil..and dusty....everything went into my ultra sonic and it looks like it just came off the production line...the light spots in the photo is just oil..i added the pachmayr presentation grips...yeah..i will shoot it...back up weapon on hog hunts...have an El Paso Saddlery 1942 TANKER shoulder holster on the way for it too....

I have two 4” and one 6”. They’d be the last to go.
 
Real nice score at a great price man! Congratulations.

As to date shipped, it's probably around 1974. I have a model 27 I bought new back in April 1974; shop got it in March 1974 and I put it on layaway until I turned 18. It's serial number is N168XXX.
 
Hey muddocktor...i have an S&W M29 N311xxx that i purchased new in late 1974...no way your m27 was built in 1974...S&W built guns and stored 'em till they got orders for 'em...they did not ship them in the same year that they built them...that is why , if u ever noticed, that the labels are attached upside down on the boxes...they guns were stored on shelves..as orders came in, they pulled from the shelves...people got careless..and the bottom of the box with the gun would fall out...sooo....S&W mandated that the labels be attached upside down...u capise..???

Don’t want to throw mud on your parade, but you should feel guilty, real guilty ....... you stole that Model 28! All kidding aside, you have one fine piece there that you can enjoy anywhere anytime. The 28s are the most-used guns in my safe. Take it out, shoot it and enjoy.

There is no telling when they were built; S&W only shows the shipping date and not the build date in a historical letter. Furthermore, the 4th edition SCSW shows the N100000 series shipped in 1973, the N200000 in 1974-1977 and the N300000 range from 1975-1976. Mind you, I have not paid for a letter on any of my guns, but I do know about when the gun shop I bought my 27-2 from got the gun in from the distributor, which was a couple of days before I put it on layaway. And that was in March of 1974. I didn't turn 18 until April 1974, which was the minimum legal age to buy a handgun in Louisiana back then from a gun shop.
 
Very nice gun, in like new condition and box to boot for a wonderfully low price! Excellent score.... Please just take those rubber things off it and put the original grips back on, it just looks soooo much better that way. Enjoy

Don't you have to be 21 to buy a handgun? Federally? :confused:

Mind you,I managed to have 4 by the time I was 21 but it probably wasn't strictly legal. My parents bought me two and an accommodating dealer sold me two, saying that if I was old enough to serve in the military, I should be old enough to buy a gun. So, on the paperwork, I suddenly progressed from 19 to 21. I don't think we had Form 4473 back then.

Actually, my first handgun was a Webley MK VI that Mother or my aunt (I think Mother) bought for me when I was 13. My first S&W came at 19, a Colt M-1917 in between. The fourth was a Colt .45 auto that'd served in the UK before being sold back here. The first handgun I bought after turning 21 was a Colt Gold Cup .45, but I was 22 by then, and the USAF Base Exchange Service had no problem in selling to me. Bought a Remington M-1100 shotgun that year, too.

Texas Star, back in 1974, not only could also you buy a pistol at 18, you could also go to bars, get drunk and buy liquor and beer at the liquor store too. :D:D:D At least that gun shop didn't have problems selling a pistol to someone old enough to drink or serve in the armed forces. These youngsters are soooo screwed over nowadays. ;)

I don't know when the age thing was changed, but it definitely was 18 when I bought my first pistol back in 1974.

Nice example, and at a super price. My first one cost 101.00 new. I now have 2@ 4" and 1 @ 6". I have another 6" that will be here today. Then I believe i am done, unless somebody has one they want to give away for 525. IMHO, they are still the best deal out there, but the prices are creeping up

Very Nice.... some folks would cringe at holstering it... I USE to be a collector....now a shooter, it was made to shoot, not looked at.... in my O-Pine. Im addicted to 28's.... will last a lifetime, way over engineered for strength which is a Great thing.
