Picked up this 4 screw Model 28 no-dash at auction recently. Bidding started at $800 and there were no bidders on last day. I almost passed until I noticed the stocks! Was only bidder until it got close to end. Then, as usual, a couple other bidders joined. Ended up grabbing it for $906. The pictures were poor and for a brief time I had buyer's remorse as it looked well used. After I got it home and gave it a good cleaning, I think I did pretty good. Shipped in 1959, just 1 year off a birth-year gun. Had it to the range over the weekend and she's a fine shooter. Thanks for letting me share!

It must be within a year of mine, s/n S190xxx. Could you tell me if yours has the s/n stamped on the back side of the extractor star like mine? The side facing toward the cylinder, not the side facing the recoil shield. It's best seen with the extractor rod pushed all the way in, and a strong flashlight. Thanks!

Pete,
Yes, the serial # (1905xx) is on the back of the extractor star. Since the serial # wasn't on the face of the cylinder, it surprised me to find it there. Shipped April 1959.

Fantastic find ! There's nothing wrong with that revolver. Does the letter (I assume you have one, since you mention ship date) say it came originally with the Cokes? Generally M28's came with magnas unless special ordered.

Thanks Hair Trigger! No letter, got the ship date from Roy Jinks (just month and year). I'd be surprised if it lettered with cokes. Pretty sure a letter would just state "diamond center walnut targets" as I don't think Smith used the term cokes. I suppose it's possible though, cokes were made from 1956 to 1965. Most of the cokes I've seen have been on 29's and 57's.

Thanks! Mine is 1900xx. S&W seems to have continued that practice on some models, or some production runs. I only found it because mine needed a bit of cleaning when I got it. Something for another thread, perhaps. Hope you enjoy shooting it!

The Cokes alone are worth almost half the price of the gun! Great catch!

Jim, I wish you could gat "COKE grips" for around $450. Haven't been able to do that for many years. The last pair I saw sold for $725 and weren't even very nice. Spin132, great pickup and your new Cokes look amazing.

Lately at least, they have been selling for $450~550 on ebay.

The link below is to a completed listing, the last one I actually followed. Sold for $455 on May 17, 22 bids from 8 bidders.

edit: According to the seller, made from "Gondola" Alves, so as they say, YMMV,:D

Wow, that is a lot less than I was seeing. I can't find my $725 example anymore, but here is a really nice pair I did find for $850.

Rogers Guns definitely has nice grips, and if you don't want to spend hours and hours looking at auctions, not a bad place to shop. I bought a different kind from them about two years ago. Overpriced by about $100, but no hassle or waiting, or straining my eyes looking at bad cellphone pics. I call that a fair tradeoff, after all they are a business.

Here is another set of cokes that sold on ebay, probably around $500, I saw detailed pics of those, and they were flawless:
