I have dibs on this gun if everything checks out. Seller rates gun at 98%. Slight turn ring on the cylinder and a little wear at the muzzle. The diamond grips are supposed to be original to the gun. Seller is going to check and see if they are numbered to the gun.

This pictures aren't good, but the seller said there aren't any suprises in the blueing and doesn't recall and dings in the wood (he didn't have the gun with him when I talked to him).

He has it priced at $649 which isn't real cheap for a model 28, but I figure the no dash, diamond grips, etc. are worth something. What are your thoughts on this price? I found one 28 no dash on GB, but I don't think it has the correct grips (they aren't diamond grips).

This would go well with my 25 no dash and 17 no dash.

My brother wants to trade me a model 14 for my 28-2. His 14 is in 98% condition, but we aren't sure if the grips are correct. It's about the age where Smith transitioned away from diamond grips.

Many people will immediately say............."that's too high".
I'm an HP nut and I don't see many four screw examples that come along in good shape with original wood.
There are junker 28-2's that sell between $400-500 (and have rubber grips on them) all the time.
I don't think that gun will last long at that price and don't think it is out of line either.

Thanks for the reply. The guy is holding it for me, so unless it isn't what he's advertised, I'm planning to buy it.

I just bought a 28-2 because it has diamond target grips that I needed for my 25 no dash. I'll either keep it for a shooter, or trade my brother. It's a real nice gun. At least 98%, but has a small spot on the side of the barrel that I couldn't see in the seller's pictures. It wasn't bad enough to send it back and I wanted the diamond grips.

It's a nice looking gun, but around here these days it might sit there for a while at that price. A 4" might move a little faster, but that's just my personal experience. In your pictures I cannot see the trigger guard screw. Not saying it's not there, I just can't see it. Stocks SN'ed to the gun would help. BTW what is the serial number? Just curious.

I also noticed that I could not see the screw in the trigger guard. I'm thinking that it's recessed and maybe I just can't see it from the side. It's one of the things that I have to verify. If it is a true 28 no dash, it should have it.

The seller didn't give a serial number. It's another question that I have for him. It should be somewhere around S176000 to S207000, give or take.

Some of those screws are flush to the frame and some protrude slightly. At the angle of the photograph a flush screw might not show up. Best of luck with it.

Are you going to be able to see the gun in person before you buy? If not, I would want to see more pictures, in higher resolution.

The seller's description only says:

6" Blue, 4 screw, 98% condition. His listing is titled "Smith and Wesson 28 no dash".

Hopefully, he got that part right. If not, I don't want it. He has almost 500 transactions on Gunsamerica, so I assume that he knows something about guns, but you know what they say about "assume".....

I'll try to get more pics. I quizzed him on the condition because his photos aren't very good. He only mentioned a little muzzle wear and turn line on the cylinder.

Is there anything in the photos that doesn't look right to you? I won't be able to look at the gun in person.

It's really hard to tell by those fuzzy pictures. What kind of feed back does the seller have?

I once saw a dealer at a gun show, when asked by a customer how many screws the S&W had, the guy counted the two visible side plate screws, the strain screw, and the grip screw and announced that it was a 4 screw gun. Of course the screw under the grip panel didn't get counted and the strain screw and grip screw don't count!! It was a 3 screw gun. I was going to say something to the customer but he walked away.

I do see some minor scratch on the ejector shroud on the left side and on the barrel just forward of the shroud. The stocks have some minor dings and scratches, so I think IMHO that more pictures would be in order. It is just too hard to tell from those pictures. Other things you already mentioned, such as the SN and stock SN should be answered as well. If he has nothing to hide that should be forthcoming.

I've seen sellers count the strain screw and I've seen them leave off dash numbers. I would ask if there is one in front of the trigger guard.Even at that angle you should see a shadow or a hint of the recess.

I agree. Better pics would be helpful. It may turn out that it isn't as nice as the 28-2 that I already have. Some peoples "98%" is different than mine. I like it because it is a no dash model with diamond grips.

Here's my 28-2:

Looks like an awesome gun to me!!

4 screw no-dashes aren't dash-2s. I think it's a good buy if it is as described.

Black, I bought a 28 no dash for $450+ shipping recently. My F.F.L. said that he thought it to be at 98%. I don't think that it is quite that high. Yes, it did have goodyears, but I had magnas, and now it wears diamond targets. 1960 gun. It is my 1st N. Prior to that I had only K's. I really liked shooting it. The targets feel good to me. I never got used to magnas. Good luck with your venture! Let us know if you get it. Bob

Well, I confirmed that it is a 28 no dash with matching numbered grips. It has the screw in front of the trigger guard.

Supposedly, no defects other than the ones that you can see in the pics. He said the bottom of the grip edge is "rounded" some, but you can only see it from the bottom. Somebody probably set it down on something.

Apparently, somebody takes pics for the guy because he doesn't have a camera to take pics. He sells these from his home in his off time.

He said "it's not perfect, but it's real nice".

Thoughts?

Sounds like he is waffling from his original description of 98% condition.

It's kinda hard to tell. I don't get the impression that he's dishonest, but it bothers me that he can't send more pics.

I'm having trouble visualizing the bottom of the grip that he described and the diamond grips are a pretty important part of the equation. He didn't think it was a big deal....

I think he thought I was being kinda anal, so I explained that his price was such that I expected something real nice with no surprises. He said that I could return it, but I'd pay shipping two ways and $20 for my FFL to receive the gun.

I dunno....

Hard to See....

It's hard to see on this 28 no dash also
MVC-056F.jpg

a lot easier from this view
MVC-059F.jpg

and a view like this would really help
MVC-063F.jpg

hope it's right for ya. Grips are numbered to this one.

I think I'm gonna let this one go. I find it odd that he can't sent more pics, but he has a LOT of guns listed on the web. Who took those pics? I checked some of his other listings and I think his idea of LNIB, etc. are different than mine. I have a feeling that I would be disappointed in the gun. Maybe not, but I'm not willing to roll the dice. If it was a $1,000 gun for $650, I might chance it.
