Model 28 replacement rear sight

Hi friends,

So i rescued this poor creature from GB; the idea was to have it refinished, add some decent stocks and have a nice looking, n frame shooter.

I'm shipping off to get the gun bead blasted and blued, but one thing that is annoying to me is the rear sight. I think I want to just replace it (especially since one of the screws popped out a couple weeks ago.

Checking brownells and midway, it seems there a number of differnet oem rear sights, but most say they only fit -4 or newer.

Which one do I need to order? Links would great (hopefully I can find it on brownells as I get free shipping with them)

You can get a rear sight kit to replace the rear sight blade, rather than try to find a M28 rear sight assembly. The front sight body hole in the frame is located in two different places, depending on the year of manufacture, so just replacing the blade is easier.

Run the sight all the way to one side and measure the height of the blade so you can buy the correct height. The kit will come with replacement screws, blade and springs and nuts. It also includes instructions.

May the good Lord bless you for undertaking the rescue of that pitiful model 28. If ever a S&W revolver needed to be brought back from the depths of ugliness, that is it. I have rescued several old Smiths but, nothing like yours. There is no telling what is hidden under that messy looking coating. It honestly makes me sad to see a fine old S&W revolver treated like that one was. Good luck with the restoration and please post before and after photos.

It was BAAAAD. I sent it out a few months ago to have it bead blasted and blued; guy said there wasn't too much he do with it.

Took it to a local smith to fix the rear sight. Told me he could fix it no problem, but it was ugly as sin. Said he could send it out to someone that would make it look like a different gun. A month later, here are the results. Keep in mind, the entire gun was pitted, and they had to buff out the logo on the side plate and the Highway Patrolman on the barrel.

Great improvement to say the least. You should have a good shooter so, take her out to the range and enjoy your 28.
