Just purchased a new 29-10 from a NJ gun shop. Store owner said it had been on order for3.5 years. Quality appears to be pretty good except for some burrs on the forcing cone and a hefty double action trigger. Looking forward to a range trip once my NJ purchase permit is approved.

Who else has a 29-10out there? Would welcome any comments. How is the recoil with 44spl and with magnums? I shoot 357 magnum - how does this compare?

It depends how much your .357 weighs?
If comparable weight, the heavy .357's will recoil more than a run of the mill .44 Special.
With moderate to heavy .44 Magnum loads, will have double to triple the felt recoil of a moderate to light .357 Magnum rounds.
So the difference is load dependent.
Heavy 180 grain .357's will recoil closer to the level of watered down .44's.

Hello LEW. I picked up a model 29-10, 4 inch last year. Finish is OK, but not as good as my earlier dash guns. DA trigger is only "decent", but SA is very nice. Gun is accurate, and very well fit, with consistent throats. Grips are nicely figured wood, that feel good in the hand, but are on the thin side for magnum recoil, at least in my big hands.

My usual load of 240 SWC over 6.5 grains of Red Dot is good for about 950 FPS, and is a pleasant and effective load thru this gun. Recoil and muzzle blast are less than a full power 158 grain .357 mag out of an L or N frame. 240 XTP's over a healthy dose of Win 296 are also accurate, great deer killers, and do kick and blast enough to get your attention, as is the case in any 4 inch gun really. Decent rubber grips that fit your hand take a lot of the "bite" out of the recoil. Hope you enjoy yours.

Thanks for the inputs!

The 29-10weighs in at6.7 ounces more than my 586-8.

Guess l will need to find out the hard way if I will be able to tolerate 44 magnum. I can always stay with 44 spl.

I always think the harder the gun kicks, the more you need stocks/grips the suit your hand. I don't care for the stocks that come on the 29-10, but they may be fine for you. Only a try and see will tell the tale.

As for tolerating the magnums, my advice is to keep both types of ammo handy. I shoot way more target loads than full-charge magnums. Shoot whatever is fun for you, what you enjoy, and don't worry about what others think or say. One thing to remember is that you will almost certainly notice less felt recoil with lighter bullets in the magnum loads. Speer used to make a very pleasant, and very accurate, 200-grain JHP Blazer load that was actually fun to shoot. I'd stay away from anything heavier than 240- or 250-grains, if you're concerned about recoil.

Good luck with your new .44 Magnum. :)

Back when I purchased my 29-10 I put a couple of boxes through it and I thought it performed very well. I have larger hands and didn't care for the factory grips so I put a set of Pachmayrs for the range. I only ever shot magnum rounds, kicks like a mule :-))

Good luck with your new gun!

Congrats on a great gun.

With 44 magnum I can manage about 18 rounds before I start sobbing for my mommy.

44 special is much easier to shoot.

I purchased a 29-10 last week. I haven't got to shoot it yet. I will get to shoot it as soon as I find some more ammo. I only have one Twenty-five box of ammo. Good luck with yours.
