Hello folks!
I am still a newbie on this forum, and I wanted to ask about a gun I am considering buying. She's a 29-2 6 " barrel (might be a 6 1/2)
in nickel finish. This gun is mint, original grips, with only a slight cylinder line.
No box or any paperwork. The shop is asking $850, but I can get a cheaper cash price. This gun would look great sitting next to my 28-2 4" Highway Patrolman.

1. Is this price good? (I have checked my Standard Catalog of S&W)
2. Is the nickel finish a pain to keep clean/maintain? I never owned a nickel firearm.

Thanks for your input and feedback!

Sounds like a nice one. As far as the price goes, without the box and such I would think that it is at the top of the price range, but I've been known to overpay to get my hearts desire. As far as the nickel goes the S&Ws are more forgiveing than some other brands as S&W did not use a copper base plate to put thier nickel on. They are a PIA to keep spotless as they show everything that touchs them. I keep mine (for a lot-O-years) with a lite coat of breakfree on the nickel, messy looking but no problems. Some folk use a wax of some sort with good effect.

I'd say that right now in this economy, and with nothing but the gun, that price is about $150 too high for a nice nickel gun, and they tend to run high in my area. Several months ago....maybe, but not now. How much better can you do? If you can get it for around $650 to $700 you won't get hurt much if at all.

I will add this- if it's something you really, seriously want, and have no plans on ever selling it, but it for the best deal you can get (whatever that comes out to), and be happy. They aren't making them like that anymore, nor will they ever again.

I agree with Tim that it is probably $100 high in the current gun market but if you really want it buy it and just think that you bought it a bit early. Like Tim said they don't make that way any more.

That's a very desirable gun, but priced to high. Like the others I agree that $150 lower would be great.

Only owned 1 gun with a nickel finish and they are fantastic. Anymore I try to buy stainless or nickel. Only thing you have to watch with nickel is don't let Hoppes get on the nickel while cleaning. Other then that it is a tough finish. Not that I don't like a blued gun but it is the worst possible finish for longevity.

Make an offer of $700 tops, if they don't take it I'd walk away.

Look it over really good for the nickel starting to peel. Look around the screw holes, along where the side plate matches up against the frame and where the crane moves into the frame. If you are going to pay top price make sure it's in top condition.

M29's will probably not get any cheaper but for $850, look it over closely.

I also think the price is too high. I just bought a 6" with case, tools etc for $600. BTW, Renaissance Wax works great to keep nickel from smearing and looking good.

Vulcan Bob states that there is no copper base plate under the nickel. I thought the only reason you couldn't use Hoppe's was that it could get to the copper base plate if there were any flaws in the nickel plating. If there isn't a copper base plate, then there shouldn't be a problem with Hoppe's?

Bob, can you share with us where you got that info?

Thanks,

Dan

Thedane, The info on the copper base plate was gleaned from three sources, one was here on the forum, cant remember who but it was one of the more informed senior members. And two was from a S&W rep friend of mine. I was thinking of haveing S&W nickel plate a finish impared 15-3 for me and asked him to check with service for me if S&W used a copper base plate or not. I was told by him that his contact at S&W said that S&W does not now nor ever had used a copper base plate in the nickeling process. And with looking at a few Colts with flakeing nickel you could see the copper and with looking at a few flakeing S&Ws you could not. Now I know this is all word of mouth but I beleave it to be the case. Remember results may vary and I could be wrong!

I paid $850 for a Nickel 29-2 with 6.5 inch barrel last year during the height of the post election price surge and it is a gun in mint condition without even a turn line. That said it didn't come with tool kit ,presentation case, or paperwork and I probably paid to much. With the market being soft and prices having fallen on guns I think the price they want for your gun is a least $100 to high.

Only you know how bad you want it and what it's worth to you so pay what you think it's worth to you and enjoy it if you buy it.

Looks like I got my nickel (circa 1973) M29-2 6 1/2 before the price surge a couple of years ago. I paid $475 for it. I still want a 4" M-29, but I know I'll never touch the price again. The party's over.
