I know a guy who has one of these.
I read recently on a post in the forum about a period with Smith Wesson were putting out 29 – twos with a 57 frame because they could not keep up with demand during the Dirty Harry craze.
With this make it more collectible?
Any more info on it would be great.
Thanks

To someone who must have every variation - maybe...To other collectors - another maybe...How deep into trivia does your interest in .44 Magnums take you?......Ben

I would think that S&W would have restruck the model number 29-2 over the 57 so I don't think it'd be necessarily desireable from a strictly collecting aspect. Nothing that I'd pay extra for.

There are many cases of re-stamping/over-stamping and mistake stamping. Unlike coins those don't really enhance the value, and generally don't reduce it either. Confuses us sometimes though.

Sounds historical in a sense, but I think I would rather have a 29. Some of the bluing on a few Model 57s are awesome I've seen. If it were only a mint stamp.

The Model 29-2 and the Model 57 use the same frame. Usually, if a frame stamped MOD. 57 in the yoke cut was used for a Model 29-2, it was over stamped 29-2. These guns have no enhanced value or collectability.

A Model 57 chambered in 44 Magnum could be a case of someone at S&W going too fast with fulfilling an order for Model 29's and not re-stamping the model number. They could just as easily be a case of a talented gunsmith swapping barrels and either swapping cylinders or rechambering the cylinder. Dirty Harry made for a crazy amount of demand for 6 1/2" barrel Model 29's.
