Model 29-2 value 6" verses 6 1/2"

I just bought a Model 29-2 that was advertised as 6 1/2"
barrel. When it came in it's a 6". About how much difference
is there in the value? I am just starting a collection.

If you want the Dirty Harry gun then that is the 6 1/2 " barrel to some it matters to some it does not , I wanted the 6 1/2" and paid a premium for it with no regrets .

The 6 1/2-inch barrel length was discontinued for the Model 29-2 sometime in 1979. If I was starting a collection, I would look for a mint 29-2 with a 6 1/2-inch barrel in its correct presentation case. You have the years 1963-1979 to choose from.

It is usually the less common variation of a particular model that is more sought after/expensive, but the association of the 6 1/2" model 29 with the movie reversed this trend compared with the 6". There is a slight premium for the 6 1/2", everything else being equal. Enjoy starting your collection and please post photos!

Dirty Harry aside, I think the 6" is actually a better looking barrel length. To me, it just looks more balanced.

Slight premium for the 6-1/2" bbl.

I have one of each (both 29-2s), purchased about one year apart before the market went crazy. The 6" bbl, although slightly more rare than the 6-1/2" bbl, was ~$150 cheaper. Personally, ignoring the Dirty Harry connection, I prefer the look and feel of the 6-1/2". Accuracy for me is about equal.

Thanks for your help. The gun I have is an N863 (1981)
The case is being redone at Joe Cebull's. I will post pictures
when i get the case back. I paid 1375 for it. Maybe have to
leave it to my Grand kids to ever see it worth that. I measured
it from the front of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.

That's the barrel length I would look for as well. I agree with ^^^^ about the presentation case and goodies as well.
