Model 29, another grip question.

I have a 4 inch barrel, 4 screw Md 29 coming my way. I know in doesn't have correct grips and want to fix that. From what I've read here and elsewhere it looks like when this left the factory it could have had either diamond target stocks or cokes. Is that correct?

I wish I knew this also. As I have a mid 60's 29-2 that I think the cokes were taken off of it before I got it not long ago. It came with the worst Walnut Diamond Target stocks ever. There is even VERY flat checkering on one side and they had to come that way as there is still original finish and sanding marks from the factory. People should not take the correct grips off these fine guns. JIM

I believe a 4 screw gun would have shipped with Cokes.

Your Model 29 would have shipped with "coke bottle" type target stocks. Cokes were phased out in favor of diamond target stocks beginning in early 1966 and your 44 Magnum dates to at least five years earlier.

Jim...Your Model 29-2 most likely shipped in early to mid-1965 with coke bottle stocks.

Bill Thank you so much. I sent for a few letters yesterday. I think it is horrible some one would take the right grips off. There is NO good reason to do this. Now it looks like I am going to have to spend a lot of money to get some COKES as nice as my gun that should have been on it. I see some nice grips on guys sites we know here but there near 1000.00 JIM FLYNN

Jim, dealers and flippers have been doing this for years... it’s a way for them to make more money :eek:
If you are patient, you can find a nice set of cokes for $400-500

Take a $2,000 gun and sell the stocks for $500 then sell the gun for $1,800 missing stocks. Makes $300 extra profit. Purists and collectors scream. Dealers see nothing wrong.

I saw a gun sell on Gunbroker and the buyer immediately put it back up sans the rare stocks. He sold it for $200 more than he paid. There is no justice.

We all wish this would not happen and maybe it will slow down some. We will all just have to be more careful. I think a lot of us on here and that like S&W and fine firearms have to move slowly. JIM
