Model 29 Bluing Concern

Good for you. I was going to add that, after all has been made right, you might consider writing a letter (not email) to the president of S&W detailing your experience.

I cannot believe that business is so good that they've given up caring about quality and customer appreciation. Up to you, of course.

Thanks for the thought, and definitely part of my plan.

Bluing issues.....

Man....you guys got me all freaking out now. I sent in a Model 28-3 back in March to get cleaned up, re-blued and tuned and I'm still waiting on it to come back. Now I'm terrified of what it's gonna look like.

Have the gunsmiths at S&W really gotten that bad?

Well guys, I got the word today that they are indeed a shipping a new 29 to my FFL. I don't know when it will arrive, yet. So, here's hoping this is all going to end well.

Tytan01, I can't speak exactly to your question...I also don't know how blueing works, etc...but I'm thinking that there was something inherently wrong with my 29 that caused all these issues.

Here's to your new Model 29 being more up to par with usual standards than your last one.

Well guys, another update. I went to my FFL to picked up the new 29. It's no better than the original. The FFL suggested that I do not take delivery, but to call S&W. I did so.

I explained to customer support...who in the end suggested I email my receipt of my 29 purchase, so that they can refund my $.

I guess I'll take the $ and find a vintage model.

Some of you folks are just being cruel when you're flashing 29-2's to OP when his 29 is obviously a new finish gun. He'll never get a new finish gun with the lovely blue of the 29-2's!!

The new finish Smiths are notoriously funky and will never match the real classic finish on the older guns.

OP would be much happier with a 29-2 than anything currently manufactured by Smith.

A wise decision. Of the few dozen S&W revolvers in my safe, only one was purchased new. All of the others are "real" classics, with fit and finish that sadly seems to be a thing of the past. The one new gun is a no-lock 642 - no problem with the bluing. :)

Buy a M629-2 or M629-3

Buy an "old" Model 629-2 or M629-3 stainless steel revolver. All you need is Flitz to keep it shiny and clean. You skip all the bluing issues :D !

A few months ago a LGS got in a newly made 29 and a 27 . The bluing on both of them was flawless. I guess the moral of the story is to examine with the gun in hand before you buy.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. Nick B, agreed. I ordered the first 29 as there were none in my area to be had.

I won't mention names, but the guy helping me at S&W sure has been trying and actually apologized. He said that the most recently sent 29 was taken from inventory, and that his hands are tied if this is how they are coming off the line.

I'll start looking for a vintage model once the funds come in. Disappointed? Yes, but sometimes things happen for a reason. Crazy part is...I didn't buy a new 29 in another dealer's inventory a year ago because the finish wasn't up to par.

Model 29 Finish Problems

Thank you for your posts. I am experiencing the same blotchy finish on my new Model 29 purchased December 2019. I have not yet contacted S&W, but will do so. Very concerned about the poor response you have experienced.
