Model 29 frame- Model 57 Cyl & Barrel

I have been looking for 15 years for a 57 that I could afford and I just found and purchased a 657-3 "7.5 Ser#CBA07##. The action is smooth and it is a real treat to shoot. Now I would like to have a short barreled one.
Being as it is so hard to find a short barrel Model 57 (in my price range), can the cylinder and barrel from a 57 be used on a model 29? I can find shooter grade 29's for a good price.

Short answer, depends. Usually yes.

It is possible but why would you want to do it? Swapping barrels is NOT like screwing a bolt in and out of a threaded hole. There are many more things involved.

Ahh, but the key words here is change the barrel and cylinder out to the cheaper and easier to get Model 29 frame and action.
But pray tell, what are the many other things beside fitting the Model 57 cylinder and putting on the barrel with setting the cylinder/barrel gap??

Barrel and cylinder swapping on a frame involves the following:

1. properly "clock" or index the barrel so that the front sight stands vertical.

2. Regulate the barrel-to-cylinder gap to specifications.

3. Re-cut the forcing cone as needed.

4. Regulate cylinder endshake, headspace, and b-c gap (related to 2 above).

5. Time ratchet and/or fit hand to obtain correct timing.

6. Fit extractor rod and center pin to forward locking bolt.

Barrel and cylinder replacement is most commonly NOT simply a matter of swapping out those two parts.

I think you'll find coming up with a good cylinder and barrel of correct length tougher than you think. Then add on to that the gunsmithing expense. Then, even after you're finished, what do you have but a "Frankengun" and what is it worth to anyone but you?

Price range?

What is your price range? 57s come along now and then. In my experience ,more often than model 29s.
I have purchased my model 57s for $400. $500. and $600. respectively.

Thank you John Traveler. This is what I was looking for and needed to know to make a decision on what to do next. Either start getting parts or take a look at the Model 357 even if it is out of my price range.
