Sight picture is very personal, but what you are suggesting sounds reasonable to me.
As my eyes have aged, I prefer lots of light around the front sight. A narrower front sight, or a slightly wider rear notch, are both reasonable ways to get there. If you have not tried a narrower front sight, and you think you might like one, then I suggest trying it.
I do not think that more light around the front sight give up much in accuracy. Some people find that sight picture sloppy, and feel that the front sight should fit very tightly in the rear sight. This is a valid preference, but it is not the only way to go. Some people shoot very accurately with a narrow front sight. The human eye is very good at centering things, so a little bit of space is not necessarily a hindrance.
With all of that said, I should admit that as my eyes have aged, I have gone to red dots for all pistol work that requires precision. However, I can still shoot iron sights more than well enough for most practical uses of handguns, as long as the sights are set up so I can see them.
