I am a new member with a old problem.I have been on the forum for a hour and i have already learned alot.Thank you all.

The model 29 I have is pre 1965 and has been sitting around for 35 years. The cylinder release latch only moves back.I can't push the cylinder out to clean or inspect the pistol. The action will not move.Where do I begin on pushing the cylinder out.

Joe - Welcome to the Forum.

Before I attempt to offer help, IS the gun UNLOADED?

Many Members including myself will help you get this figured out.

You say the action will not move, I assume the hammer will not come back? See first response.

yes i am sure the gun is unloaded!yes the trigger will not move, and the hammer will not move.

thanks for the welcome

I'm not sure what "sitting around for 35 years" means but I'd take the grips off and spray the the dickens out of it with a gun-cleaning lubricant/cleaner. Use a safe/modern product that will not harm blue finishes. I've never experienced what you have but I've alwayed over maintained my revolvers too.
Is it rusted, corroded or any other apparent problems that we need to know about?
Where has it been stored?

Is there something stuck in the forcing cone? Hold it up to the light so that you are looking at the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. Anything there?

sitting around for thirthy-five years means, the pistol was sitting in a pachmayr gun works super deluxe case for 35 years.I will lube it up and let it sit tonight. There is light rust in the barrel, that i believe will clean up fine.

there is nothing stuck in the forcing cone,I can see the gap you are talking about.

The spring loaded piece in front of the ejector rod (mounted in the under barrel shroud) is probably also stuck in place by either rust or solidified oil. (or whatever you call it)

I will de-grease the spring loaded area in front of the ejector rod. There is a very tiny pin sticking out of the under shroud you mentioned.

It is the locking bolt Joni, Take a small screw driver and try to pry it to see if it will move.If it will push on the thumb piece and see if it goes forward, if it does check the bolt on the barrel and see if it is pushed back. If not take the screwdriver and push it back. With it held with the screwdriver push thumbpiece and try to open cylinder. Well if this fails or the thumbpiece won't move forward, remove side plate and strip the guts out and push on the bolt (part that thumbpiece attaches to) won't move, remove the the bolt.oil it good and leave over night. Install bolt and see if it moves. If not (I don't like doing this if you can get out of it) take a punch and put on the bolt and tap punch with hammer and see if it moves.

Also, try to turn the cylinder with your fingers on one hand while trying to cock the hammer with the other. Do it at the exact same time with steady even pressure. It sounds like the gun is either gummed up from too much lube and sitting for so long, or as others have mentioned, possibly rusted in place at the locking bolt and center pin. If you can't turn it with your fingers while trying to thumb back the hammer, drop a few drops of a quality penetrating lube at the point on the crane where the ejector rod goes through it, right between the crane and cylinder. Then turn the gun up and leave it sit so that the lube can run down the center pin through the center of the cylinder.

Joe; If it has been sitting around for 35 years it would likely benefit from a trip to a good Pistolsmith for a complete and professional cleaning. It doesn't take many "mistakes" to make a complete mess out of a fine revolver. Most "Pros" that I know will charge an hours worth of labor for this kind of a project. Now if you choose to play around with it, you might get luck and then again you might end up with a much higher "Bill" than if you had gone the route of paying for a much over due Service Call. If he/she charges you $70.00 for a complete cleaning - about average - you can just think about the fact that that will only amount to a $2.00/year investment.

THANK YOU ,

KKG AND OTHERS
I HAVE CALLED SMITH AND WESSON AND GOT THE INFO ON HOW TO SHIP THE PISTOL.I WILL LET IT SOAK UNTIL 2-20-09.

I BELIEVE I HAVE A MODEL 29-1 8 3/8 INCH
4 SCREW SERIAL #S206791

I CAN WORK ON A HARLEY BUT I SEE THIS NEEDS MORE TENDER CARE.

thank you all,

The oil running down the ejecter slide worked.I did not have to touch any of the four screws to corect this problem. I was able to find the model number the pistol is a no dash 29.I have another issue I will be asking for help later today on this forum.I am trying to get a diagram of parts for a model 29 so I can ask the right questions using the corect part names. If there is anyone who knows where a diagram is please let me know.

thank you vm for the parts listing and diagram.

I am going to try and explain my new issue.During the process of oiling the gun(model 29-no # 4 screw) up yesterday I took the screw out in front of the trigger(earlier I said I did not touch any of the 4 screws I was wrong I did). The cylinder stop spring and cylinder stop pin fell out(i hope i described them by name).I may have put them in wrong.I tried to ease the pin and the spring out a couple of hours ago.I gave up.I
will try tommorow. What is the correct way to put the pin and spring in.
pin 1st then spring then screw.

There is a lot of lube in there.I hope to get them out tommorow.
