The locking bolt pin on my new 6.5" Model 29 protrudes out of the right side of the barrel between 1/32" and 1/16". From the indent on the left side it appears it may have been staked in too far. Should I attempt to get it flush and if so, how to do without damage? Thank!

In your photo, it doesn't appear to be protruding very much. A brass or hard plastic punch in front of a small 4oz. hammer should do the trick.

I always had a hard time keeping the end of a punch perfectly lined up on little pins like that. So, I took a couple of small finish nail set punches that have a small cup in the tip and chucked them up in a drill and turned them side ways against a grinder until it was a bit smaller than the pins i use them on.. The little cup keeps me lined up and doesn't mar or flatten the domed tip of the pin. I make a lot of little handy dandy tools.

It looks fine and I would leave it a lone. They are tight pins to begin with and need at least a cup tip punch to move those pins. If you are so incline to do so, make sure you mask tape around both sides of the pin so if the punch slips off, you will not mar the finish of the gun. Enjoy the 29.

Model 29-10 locking bolt pin
I took another very close look at my new model 29 with the 6 1/2 inch barrel. Again, my pin is exactly like yours. If you look at the other side of the pistol you will see the pin is flush so if you tried pushing that pin through it would just protrude from the other side. After looking at the protruded side under a magnifying glass it seems that the protruded side of the pin is actually the head of the pin. I would not advise trying to push that pin head in without consulting S&W first because I really do think that pin is sitting exactly as it should be. I think that head is meant to protrude and you could screw up your pistol trying to tap something in that is not meant to be tapped. Just my two cents.

My apologies gentlemen. I called S&W this morning and they explained that sometimes the pins are that way and to just tap it in with a screwdriver handle or something similar. I tapped mine in with no problem. Again, my apologies for any confusion I may have caused.
