Model 29 Mountain gun Dilema(sort of)

So a few years back I bought a model 29 mountian gun (blued version) its a 29-8, so with lock, and I know there is a lot of negative feelings towards the lock but anyways I thought it a beautiful gun, Bought it and its been in the back of my safe ever since. So the dilema is that I want to shoot it just becouse, is there any real value in keeping it unfired or should I just go have fun with it?
What do you guys think?

I bought a 1985 mfg. 624 ND 3" unfired NIB and labored over the same decision.

Shot it. Glad I did.

Now I shoot it a lot.

Shoot it! Lots of people including myself could care less if they have a lock or not.
I prefer the newer guns as the tolerances are better and they seem to have better actions than the older models and hold up better to hotter loads.

I would also be one who doesn't care if it has a lock. No big deal to me as if I were you I would shoot it.

I bought a 629 in 91. Like you, I too toyed with the thought of "do I shoot it or do I not". Well I did! I'm glad I did. It's one of the most enjoyable handgun's I own. Well, next to the 50AE Desert Eagle.

I have a 29-8 MG. "Hell" is a give and take proposition with that gun. Seriously, the recoil is not all that bad. It is a fun gun to shoot and very accurate. The original rubber (Hogue) grips would wear a hole in my hand. After the first 100 rounds or so, I put a set of Ahrends "Retro Combat" grips on it, and couldn't be happier with the handling and appearance.

I put the 500 grips on my 1989 Mountain Revolver and the
shooting experience with full loads went from dreary to fun!
They are not lookers. Don't even fit completely right but they
do the job. Probably never going to put others on that gun.

And, yeah, I shoot it weekly. I have already destroyed whatever
collector value it had by modifying it.

Another vote to shoot it. I bought one of the first Mountain Revolvers way back when and liked it so much I went looking for another. Ended up with a Mountain Lion which is the laser engraved version of the Mountain Revolver. The Lion sat in the safe for over 20 years before I finally dragged it out and started shooting it. I always thought it might be worth something. That didn't make it so.

I used to say that about Russian SKS back in the day for $49, DCM Garands $300, and Colt Trooper MKIIIs as wells as S&W 586 (I sold for $275 back in the mid-1990's) etc... But who knows... you don't see a lot unfired older 29 these days

Shoot it!!! As far as the lock goes...if I had the chance to buy one without the lock sitting beside one with the lock...I would of course probably try to get the one without. All other things being equal at the same time, I might pay slightly more for no lock, just for resale value. That said, I have guns with and without and as far as to shoot, use and have fun the lock being there or not has nothing to do with it. Resale only. I doubt the locks will be around forever and who knows, at the end of the day guns with locks will be the rarer of the Smith's and have "collector value." Guys will look back and say. "remember back when communist democrats ran things and they made use use keys to unlock our guns so we could shoot?"

I bought a 629 with less than 10 rounds through it. I thought about keeping it that way - for about 5 minutes. I actually bought it because my brother needed some money but I quickly discovered I really needed that gun when black bears started showing up in my yard every night. No I haven't shot one - yet. I just don't want to be on the short end of a bear confrontation type situation if you know what I mean. I carry that 629 with me pretty often just around the house at night. I carry a 12 ga. too at times. It just depends on what I need to do. But you can bet I've shot that S&W many times getting ready for that big day when I'll need it and I'm still hoping that day never comes but the bears are getting more aggressive all the time here. I had one clacking it's teeth at me from about 60 yards away when I was grilling some steaks just after dark a couple of weeks ago. That bear shows up every time I fire up the grill. Sooner or later it's going to try to test me I believe.
