Model 29 question

just had a 6.5 inch barrel mode 29 offered to me. I noticed the bluing on the barrel looked a little different than on the frame. he said ha bought it like that and the only part that has been changed was the cylinder by s&w. serial number is n122382 and I could own it for 500.00. good deal?

If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is. I would have it carefully checked over by someone who knows S&Ws.

I mean, it is so odd to change out a cylinder, it makes me wonder what is going on with the gun.

Prudence and caution are called for in this case.

Frame to barrel shades of blue sometimes vary a bit but the cylinder change sounds a little spooky to me.

I agree about the different coloring. It's not unusual to find some with a deep blue barrel and a black/grey frame. But as the others said, beware of the cylinder change. But if you can get the price down, who cares.

I can't speak to the 29 in question, but as far as having the cylinder replaced, I have a 325NG that had two chambers that had hard extraction, no matter what I shot in them. I finally looked close & saw the the face of the cylinder, under the extractor, had numbers, imprinted by the factory, in a circle between the chamber openings & the extractor rod. Some of them were too close to the chamber's edge & caused a slight dimple. New cartridges loaded without issue, but fired ones scraped heavily on extraction. S&W recognized the problem when I complained. They replaced it under warranty, but the cylinder & frame color (black) aren't the same. And though I know they replaced it, they provided no paperwork, with the repaired gun, showing the work was done by them. So if I decide to sell it, I'll be in the same situation.

it also has a patridge front sight with a gold bead and I thought it should have a red ramp. did they come this way?

That gun came standard with a red ramp front sight but could have been ordered with something else or changed after leaving the factory.

would it have come with a presentation case also?

what type of box would be correct? did thay all come in a presentation case?

If it was changed at the factory, I would not worry about it as I am sure that they checked out the whole revolver before putting in a new cylinder and sending back. Check to see if the cylinder is recessed. After the recessed cylinders ran out, a cylinder was replaced with a non recessed one. At that price, the only thing I would worry about would be making sure the gun is in good shape, functionally. There is a thread here somewhere on how to check out a used gun.

how do I tell if it came in a cardboard box or with a presentation cases?

I believe they all came in a presentation case.

the cylinder was replaced with a recessed cylinder. the reason was an ejector factor and s&w decided to replace the cylinder assy.
