Asking a question for my dad as he isn't an online type. Some guys at GlockTalk pointed me here saying you'll have an answer if anyone does.

He is wondering if anyone would have an approximate value for his special order( He thinks?) Model 29 Smith and Wesson .44 with a 8 3/8 barrel. Is the certificate of authenticity worth sending $50 to Smith and Wesson for? He knows this is an educated guess and appreciates any help in advance.

My dad bought this a few years back BNIB from a relative because he couldn't pass up the price. He didn't really know what to do with it besides let it sit. He shot approximately 40 rounds through it before someone told him it might be worth more than what he thought. Apparently it is a special order. My dad wants to buy an AR and he might sell this to fund that. He plans on sending $50 to S&W so he can get a certificate of authenticity. Serial number matches box. There is small scratch on the frame and around the cylinder. The grips and hammer are still sharp feeling and have not worn down at all.

Is this just a regular old S&W 29-3 like I think it is? If it is what is it worth?

Thanks again.

Welcome to the Forum!

That's a nice 29-3, but I don't think that it is a "special order" of any kind.
The numbers under the "spec. order" are a Julian date, indicating that the gun was manufactured on the 48th day of 1998.

As far as value goes it's probably around $5-600 give or take a hundred, depending on location. You might find someone who'll pay more, but the 29-3 is the first model made where they got rid of the P&R (like a 29-2), but doesn't have all the endurance features that were added in later models (29-4 and up).

I'm hoping that doesn't bust any bubbles, but I wouldn't want to have your Dad get his hope up and spend $50 just to find out what I just said.

And...... I am not any kind of S&W expert, not compared to the other members of this forum. I'm sure if I have erred someone will be kind enough to stop in and make a correction.

He may find someone who will swap him for an AR, just do your research first and don't swap a $600 gun for a $400 AR. There are good ones and not-so-good ones out there, and it's not hard to get an idea of what's what if you can use the internet.

Personally, I think you guys should shoot that gun enough to know you won't be regretting getting rid of it, should you choose to do so.

Welcome to the best source of info on all things S&W!

Beautiful revolver! It must have been a joy to shoot.

I think it's a standard model 29, nothing unique to add extra value.

But it is in superb condition!!

Many here would be proud to own such a great gun.

I agree with the others that it is a standard model 29-3 without the pinned barrel or recessed cylinder chambers that ended with the 29-2 which would make it worth less then a 29-2. It also doesn't have the endurance package unless it's marked 29-3E which would add a little extra to the price. I think the pricing given above is right on target depending on the buyer.

600.00 sounds about right. IF IT WAS A FOUR INCH, 600.00 WOULD BE A STARTING POINT
