I just saw one in my local gun shop. It is in serial # range 23xxx I believe, Mechanically it is just fine and tight, Not a target model, in 44 S&W, 8" or so barrel and I would say in very good condition.
They are asking 300 for it,,,,
Should I get it?
Rifeling clean/sharp and mirror like, Blueing very nice with small freckles.
YAY or NAY???????

pred, that sounds like a helluva deal if it is as you described. If it has the original grips it would be worth $300 as parts. If you get it be sure to post some photos.

I went back, thinking I would just but it since I didnt have any time tonight or this weekend to make up my mind, Got there, The son who told me the price was out for dinner, Dad was there, I told him I was interested in the old smith, and his son told me 300., Well Dad got big grin on his face, and said that son was wrong, This is a shop where unprices guns are common, And son looked up $ wrong,
Dad said 3000. I said, Thank you anyway....
If I had just gotton it when only son was there, There'de be some son whoopin going on about now.
I guess I am kind of glad it worked out this way. I would feel guilty otherwise.

Probably just as well, Pred. You would have felt guilty if you had not done what is right. Hope something else good comes your way.

Pred, If the gun is as nice as you say, and hasn't been refinished, it's a steal at $3,000. Original American models, good bores, tight, with blue still visible, go for a lot more than $3K in any auction. (I just sold a 90% American for over $12K.) At that serial range, it could be a transition model, which adds even more value. Get Charlie Pate's great book, "Smith & Wesson American Model" - read it, and go check out the gun.
