Model 3 American Transitional?

I recently acquired a Smith&Wesson Model 3 American and at first thought it was a 2nd production model. After a closer inspection, the hammer has a knotch that fits into a spur when the hammer closes and the bottom of the frame is straight without the hump to accommodate the larger pin. There is also a bushing around the firing pin hole. The numbers on the cylinder, latch, barrel, etc all match. The s/n is 29*** and the patent numbers end at Aug. 24, 69. I thought it was odd for the characteristics of a transitional model to show up with such a late serial number. Any helpful information on this gun would be appreciated. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

Welcome to the Forum. That is a high serial number for a transitional gun, however with S&Ws " never say never! " Be sure the pictures show allthe serial numbers and all the assembly codes, and where they are stamped, for a good analysis of your gun. Ed.

Like I said above, I need pictures of all numbers and stamps and where they are located to give you a correct analysis. The gun is definitely a refinished transition with the second type recoil shield and hammer, but with the first model frame. Are you absolutely sure the original serial number is 5 digits? What's the number stamped on the back side of the right stock panel? Ed.
