If that's the original box, your Model 31-1 shipped in 1985, not in 1982.

The special order number on your J frame's box end label is the Julian date not showing the first two digits of the year. It was boxed on the 275th day of 1985. The only way to know how long it took S&W to sell and ship it is to buy a $75 historical letter. I'd spend the $75 on reloading supplies.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes this is the original box.

I was struggling to get detail for my gun, as this info in not available on net. I need to order the holster & grip for this piece and was not sure of the frame.

Thanks a lot you guys for helping me out sharing this precious detail.

Nice find. That will be an enjoyable gun to shoot. If i were just starting out shooting that one, i’d buy one of the inexpensive Uncle Mike’s brand nylon holsters and spend the rest of my budget on a bunch of ammo. Shoot it enough to gain familiarity with it before you spend a lot of money chasing accessories. You may well find that you like it just as it is.

Froggie

Yes Froggie, that sweet & smooth gun, I have fired more than 50 rounds so far, Magtech WAD cutter.

I bought this gun from one of my friends, Me and Him both were unaware of the more info about this gun.

S&W Model 31-1's

The S&W Model 31's are generally very accurate, and enjoyable guns to shoot. I have 31-1's in 2" and 3" and like them both!

I like the little J-frame .32s. I've got a 2" Model 30 along with 3" and 4" Model 31s. The 2" was my wife's gun. Great shooters, wonderfully accurate and minimal recoil. What's not to like? :D
If you're gonna carry it, I suggest using Magtech 98gr SJHP ammo. That's what my wife kept in her gun. Its got an excellent reputation and has proven to be reliable and accurate to me over many years of use. ;)

How do you tell the difference between the I frame and Jframe 32’s?
The J frame was created because I frames did not have a long enough cylinder window for .38 Special so cylinder length is one way to tell. Early I frames had V mainsprings like the larger frames. That changed to coil mainsprings in the improved I frames in 1953. After J frames came out I frames then improved I frames continued to be used for .38 S&W and .32 S&W Long until about 1961 so the last few years of I frames had Model numbers. My memory of the dates could be off a little.
