I recently bought a 36-10 (less than 6 months old). I don't know if it's my fondling, but the back strap is showing splotches of wear, so it looks like the finish is cheapened with the classic series.
I've heard of the "finish" problems on cylinders for recent "classic" series revolvers. Any one have that problem with theirs?

Welcome to the forum. Your finish issue doesn't look good. Maybe contact S&W customer service and send them that photo?

From your pic, it looks like there is an issue with the finish/wood on the grips that coincides with/matches the damage to the backstrap, almost like there was something corrosive or a chemical reaction?

You may be right about chemistry, I hadn't really thought about that. But if you can see it on my new pic, there's wear on top on either back-side of where the hammer is, near the top of the grips. Plus, if you can see it (it's hard to see), where the hammer contacts the frame when cocked, the finish wore off and it's shiny "steel" under it. So 🤷🏽‍♂️

Also, when I noticed it, I thought it was just a stain or something on the backstrap, so I tried to scratch it off with my fingernail.

Doesn't really matter to me; I'm getting altamont panel grips coming soon

Have you ever used any wood cleaners on the stocks. The wood cleaning/rejuvenating products may contain ammonia based ingredients which are bad for the current eco-friendly blued finishes.

Naw. No wood cleaners. I felt the stock grips were too "cheepy". However, when I initially got the gun, I replaced the grips with VZ Grips, wrap-around covering the backstrap. Fired the pistol with those on, then recently appreciated the stock panel-style grips.

Maybe THAT was the fatal mistake
