Hello all,
Could someone lookup in the standard catalog the mfg. date range for my fathers Model 36, 3 inch blue, Ser. # 165J31.
I have the original box with papers and tools with a receipt dated 5/1973. for $92.00 What a true time capsule . I will post pictures when I return home. I know this is not the correct forum category but I have a few friends who post here, that's why I posted here.
Thanks in advance.

I found the original receipt in the box, someone had blacked out areas long before we got it.

Based on others in the database I'd guess S&W shipped your Dad's
Chiefs Special in the summer of 1972.

Does it have a round or square butt, and is the serial number
stamped on the inside of the right stock? (the J will not be on the
stock)

Robert: the SCSW, 4th Ed., p 489 lists the s/n range incorrectly as
1971-72. It's really 1970-1973.

S&W 36-1 3" is an interesting weapon in Finnish firearms law.
A round butt is a pocket gun and you can only get a gun permit for it on the basis of a profession or with a gun collecting permit, a squore butt can be obtained for example for precision shooting.
In Finland, all pistols and revolvers that fit into a 13 x 18 cm (5,12" x 7,09") box are pocket guns

Finnish Firearms LAW 9.1.1998/1 said:
Section 8 Pocket gun
A pocket gun refers to a firearm, not a gas gun, that fits into a rectangular box with internal dimensions of 130 x 180 millimeters, placed in such a way that the barrel and butt of the weapon are parallel to the plane of the bottom of the box. (7.6.2019/724)

When placing a firearm in a box, the magazine of the weapon must be removed and the weapon must be equipped with its usual sighting device and handle or butt side plates, and without parts that increase the external dimensions of the weapon.

My own is SB
