I just acquired a Model 36, 2" barrel, nickel finish, square butt w/ service grips, blue 2 pc. box, cleaning rod & brush, & papers from a relative. The serial number is J812xxx.

Everything appears new and unused.

Can anyone tell me more about it (DOB, rarity, value, ect.)?

Thanks

Model 36 DOB

According to the Standard Catalog of SMITH & WESSON 3rd By Jim Supica & Richard Nahas the dob is 1981 or so. The book dobs may be close but with S&W it does not mean that guns were shipped by serial number. They were numbered on the frame and were not assembled in serial number order and then they were placed in a vault after assembly and were not taken out of the vault in serial number order.

You have a nice package but not rare by any means. The model 36 was a very popular model. Nickel guns were in the minority as well as guns with box and tools are certainly fewer than guns that have been separated from the original box.

What would be a fair price for that gun (I have that almost an identical gun)?
