I've been looking at what I assume to be a friend's model 36. It is engraved "M60," and under that is marked "36." It is square butt, 2" pinned barrel, and blued.

I've been trying to figure out how it can be both a M60 and a 36. Can anyone help me out?

It can't be both. If it is stainless steel construction, it is a Model 60. If it is blued finish, it is a Model 36. Sometimes model markings are stamped incorrectly at the factory but that doesn't alter what the gun is.

A Model 60 is made of stainless steel. If this gun is blued, then it is a Model 36.

Hope this helps.

Under the yoke,my three old Chiefs say MOD. 36 or MOD.36-1. One of them has the 36 under the MOD. None are abbreviated to M36. My modern j-frame has the serial number over 442-2, no MOD or M at all.
Could the stamped M60 be some sort of military or police agency designation?

Now your on to something... A "pocket size" belt fed Model 60!! Where do I get one of those? Note: I have "normal" size pockets:) Kyle

Thanks all. This is the one. With that information I looked really close and its not M60--it's MOD over 36. Sure looked like M60 though:)

Phew! Now we can all sleep soundly tonight, knowing there isn't some previously undiscovered Model 60-36 we would now be compelled to collect!
