I cannot find any information in the SCSW in regards to a Model 36 I own with the serial number of 3J171. The 3 in front of the J is what puzzles me. Maybe one of you S&W super sleuths can give me a hand.

It is just S&W's serial numbering of the period. At the time, when the J range got to a certain number, they started over with a 1 in front of the J and then when that got to a certain number, they put a 2 in front of the J and so forth. I believe they did the same thing with the K serial numbers, but cannot remember without looking in the book.

Thanks S&Wchad I recently aquired a 979JXX and I was wondering the same thing I was suprized that it was that old pinned barrel 36-1 3" little holster wear it is a pretty good shooter though I traded a taurus model 94 5" stainless for it. I recently bought a new model 63 for a woods/plinker to replace the taurus 94 the trigger on that thing was a bear in double action.

The floating J confuses a lot of folks, including me until I was schooled

Nothing particularly unusual about it.
