My Mom just gave me my Grandfather's/Dad's .38 SPL. I would really like to know how old it is. Can't find anything through S&W, or the net. Friend suggested I try here. This is what I've got- S&W Model 36(no dash)
S/N- 614003(no Letter)
2" Barrell, Fixed Sites and Wood Grips w/Diamond Checkered pattern.
Captain's Special?
Hope this is enough info to find out how old it is. Can send pictures if needed.
Thrilled to add this to my collection!
Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
Your Model 36 Chiefs Special probably shipped in the mid to late 1960’s. I’d guess ‘67-68.

If the stocks are original to the gun, you’ll find the serial number stamped on the inside of the right panel.

This thread should provide more information:

Welcome aboard from ol' Wyo.

Two on my list that bracket yours shipped in April 1968.

Yes, we'd like to see photos!

Is it blue or nickel, and does it have a round or square butt?

Thanks for the quick responses and info!
67/68 sounds about right. Found out today that my Grandfather only owned it for a year or less before giving it to my Dad in '68.
With the exception of a day or two in '83, it has been locked away since '68. Looking forward to shooting with it again.

Attached are a couple of photos. Thanks again!
