Model 36 ship date

Visited a LGS about 2 hours from my home I don't get to very
often. They have a M36 offered at $550.00 No box, docs, tools etc. Flat latch, pinned barrel, period correct diamond grips but not serialized. Serial number 370xxx. Probably 97%.

I'm trying to pin down a close shipping date. SCSW shows
that serial number range from 1962-1969. I think it's some
where around 1965-66.

Model 36 no dash

I always thought the Model 36 no dash was associated with years 1965 to 1967, but the OP mentions flat latch so "an early no dash"?

Mine is all original, matching box and docs and confirmed by Dr. Roy as shipping in January 1967. S/N 501664. Mine has the standard (contoured) latch.

As far as price mentioned I'd say the $550 is good, even though a 2 hr drive to get it.

The "no dash" Model 36 had a long life span: 1958 - 1988.

S&W launched the Model 36-1 -- 3" Heavy Barrel -- in 1966 to satisfy a need identified by the NYPD, according to Dr. Jinks.

S&W concurrently made the 2” & 3” lightweight barrel Model 36 and the 3” Heavy Barrel Model 36-1 till 1976, then discontinued the 3” lightweight barrel on carbon steel Chiefs. Model 36-1 also lasted till 1988.

The flat latch thumbpiece gave way to the contoured J-frame thumbpiece, and was “incorporated February 11, 1966,” Jinks. This is one "change order" that seems to have happened overnight -- I can't find examples on either side of Dr. Jinks' date that reflect a transition from one to the other.

Model 36 Ship Date

Went back to to the LGS, owned by a friend or mine, looked
at the M36 again, we negotiated, and it went home with me
for $500 OTD.

The photos do not do the bluing any justice. Just a very very slight bluing loss at the tips on both side of the muzzle. It's not as washed out as it appears. Kind of hard shooting in available light.
Haven't cleaned it up at all.

Not too bad looking for 57 years old.
