Model 36

I have a Model 36 snubbie, I have a few questions if anyone could answer. Serial number starts off as 441xxxx no dashes no J's does anyone know to when this gun was made?Second question is that on the inside of the frame where the model 36 is stamped by the cylinder mine is double stamped does this make the gun rare? and how difficult is it to find a box a paperwork for it to keep in all original? I am not a dealer or anything but i really like this gun it is my first Smith and this gun is really nice good workmanship in it.thanks for the help.

Welcome to the Forum. If you meant 441xxx (a six-digit SN) it is probably a 1964-'65 gun. A minor stamping error probably doesn't increase its value; there was a recent photo of a gun with its barrel stampings upside down, and I think something of that degree would attract attention.

The proper box of this era would be dark blue, two-piece with silver printing. It would have a cleaning rod, swab and brass bore brush in a small plastic bag, a warranty card and a model 36 parts sheet. There may have been other paperwork but I don't have an original boxed gun of this era. Hope this is helpful.

Congratulations on the model 36 as your first S&W. You can occassionally find S&W boxes and paperwork on Ebay for sale. The ads will usually say S&W box for model 36 snub nose or something similar. They also sell some of the paperwork up there also but some of it is reproductions.

Thank you for the congrats I am very impressed with this gun i would have to say this gun looks brand new the action and cylinder roataion are tight and bluing are like new condition. Paid 288.00 for it at a pawnshop here in Nevada.

Son you didn't buy that revolver you stole it. Around here that's at least a $450 revolver in that condition and as nice as that one is some would be asking $500.

Unfortunately finding a correct period box that isn't numbered to the gun won't make it "original" and won't add much value for resale.
