I'm looking at a model 36 it's in fair condition .The mechanics are good but it has some scratches finish wise but that isn't a problem for my intended use .The serial number is 182880 hoping for help dating this .I can get it for 250 bucks which I feel is pretty good .

Based on the information below, your Model 36 would date late 1950's to early 1960's.

Perhaps someone will be able to refine the date a bit closer.

If you get the chance, please post some pictures of your new acquisition. Sounds like you did well.

For models 36, 37, 38, 49, 50 and pre model number versions.

1950 = start at 1
1952 = 7369 - 21342
1953 = 28916
1955 = 55050 - 75000
1957 = 117770 - 125000
1962 = starts at 295000
1969 = ends at 786544

J serial Prefix serial numbers.
For models 36, 37, 38, 49, 50.

1969-1970 = J1 - J99999
1971-1972 = 1J1 - 999J99
1973-1974 = J100000 - J250000
1975-1976 = J250001 - J370000
1976-1977 = J370001 - J610000
1977-1978 = J610001 - J670000
1979-1980 = J670001 - J760000
1981 = J760001 - J915400
1982 = J915401 - 1J18600
1983 = 1J18601 - 1JXXXX

1955 - 4 screw side plate ends
1957 - stamping of model number at 125000
1966 - flat latch ends
1968 - diamond grips end
1975 - heavy barrel standard

Thanks guys this is a help ,I am more than likely going to get this gun just be ause it a decent price but I was certainly hoping it would turn out to be a 1961 dated gun that would be my birth year + I have come to really appreciate the J frames for som reason am drawn to them. The same guy has a Victory for sale but it has a short barel and has been nickled but no barel lug so no collector value but I could it for 2 Benjamin's so who knows . No I think I will stick to the J frame lol naw I want want want oh why couldn't I have been born rich rather than so good looking .

Definitely pass on the ex-BSR junker and get the great deal on the Model 36.

I have a 149- example from April 1959 and found a 212- that shipped in June 1961, so I think this one will likely miss your birth year and fall into 1960. Still a no-brainer at that price.

My wife is from Anniston and her Dad and brother went to University of Alabama..... Just thought I'd say hello to a fellow Crimson Tide fan.

Sounds like you're getting a great deal! We need pics. :)
