Found a model 36 sn 576XXX. Would this be the right forum for it?

Congrats.
Those stocks are the first style magnas without diamonds. They
didn't last long and were replaced by ones with a smaller
checkering pattern.
I agree with Chad -- 1967 -- but there aren't many near it in the
database with ship dates so as always it's an educated guess.

then there is this mystery grip Model 36 no dash
I have never been able to figure this one out...bought from an estate sale, typical "sock drawer" gun, most likely never fired outside of factory, came with the box and stuff.
I asked Roy Jinks for the ship date and he came back with January 1967, so this gun should technically have diamond magnas, but as you can see they are the non diamond and what looks like the "smaller" checkering.
Compounding my mystery, the grip washers are different materials, yet these two grip panels "bookend" like you don't believe.
So..........original owner well after delivery in 1967, changed out the diamond to non-diamonds, somehow original grips damaged by the sock drawer storage?
I'll never know, but there it is. Affects "value" negatively? Who knows or cares.........I don't at this point.

They dont appear to be numbered to the gun and they obviously haven't been fitted. It seems obvious to me. They're a married pair that were added at some time after the gun left the factory. Up until about 1973, blued steel circle inserts (washers) came on blued/nickeled guns and silver washers (stainless steel) came on stainless guns. Magna stocks were fitted to guns until about 1980.
I'd bet money that the OP's stocks aren't numbered to his gun either. That's just not how S&W did things back then. They fitted the stocks to the frame before the finishes were applied and numbered the stock so they could be reunited with the gun.
This is a model 60 from around 1969. These stocks both have stainless washers and the right panel is numbered to the gun. Note how well they were fitted.

I traded off a 10-8 for a M36. It was a good trade. Nice personal protection gun, from whatever, front pocket carry. It's newer, J205129, I think it was made in 1973. Never cared to letter it. Funny, somewhere in its history the stocks were changed maybe, as they are a couple thousand numbers off but period correct. The medallions are more silver-colored but the checkering looks like the stocks in post #7 except for the medallions. I carry it often. Always looking for the Lost Planet Airmen.

The original paperwork in its box shows 3/67 as the version of its manual. I would have been a few months short of 7 years old at that time. I’m actually believing this is about a 1968 gun. I bought it last Thursday for $400, which is probably many times what it cost new.

I just looked at an Irv's gun shop catalog (Inkster MI) from 1969. The Model 36 is listed at $76.50.
Inflation has taken its toll... My older brother got an engineering job at Ford's and ordered a new Ford XL with a 429 engine in 1969. It cost him about $3K!
