Model 38 Age?

I bought my first handgun thinking it was newer than it might actually be. I am new to handguns and didn't realize S&M's were hard to identify on your own. I thought I could just look it up online somewhere. The gun shop didnt tell me anything about it except it came from a retired police officer. Anyway, I chose this as my first gun because to me it seems like the perfect conceal gun and I love the hidden hammer, "snag free". on one side of barrel it says smith & wesson, on the other side it says Airweight 38 SPL ctg.
On plate behind the cylinder is Mod 38 under that is serial number 044xx and under that is a horizontal letter I. I've tried to figure this out on my own but cant, police regulation? Bodyguard? Age? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, WELCOME to the forum! You have one of my favorite Smiths, a model 38, the original Bodyguard. The all steel one was the model 49; yours is the lighter Airweight one.

I'm sure someone will be along soon who can give you a DOB. By the way, the grips on your gun now are not the originals.

welcome to the forum! and to s&w revolvers. that is not the serial number. it is just a soft-fitting number used during fitting/assembly. the actual serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame. it is not visible on your gun due to the "target" style grips. take the grips off, and let us know the actual serial number, and someone will get you close on the ship date!

Your Bodyguard Airweight would likely have been made in 1972.

Thanks for the help? I found some info which confirms the 1972 opinion. 99% sure the gun is 1971-1972. I think its a good start to my collection and I look forward to my new hobby. Again, thanks.
