Great firearm...do a search on this or some of the other forums you'll find a wealth of info...started out as what is referred to as the "pre model 39" which meant the Model 39 was not marked on the gun..then SW started marking the pistol Model 39..then after some minor design changes, the Model 39-2 came to be..all in all, production ran from early 1950s until early 80s when the model was discontinued. In some folk's view, one of the better fitting pistols made. Again, do some searching and you'll find most of what you want to know about this model.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I couldn't get the search function to work on "39-2".

That is odd, I know I've seen Mod 39/439 threads, but they aren't coming up. The 439 was the 2nd generation of the 39 and had some safety and performance upgrades. Otherwise, the frames are the same and there are several interchangable parts. Here are two links on the 39:

The 39 is the grandpa of all S&W hammer fired semi-auto's. They are beautiful and one day I'll break down and buy one, but that takes some elusive creature called money. Enjoy your pistol.

1st generation compact S&W metal frame, SA/DA trigger, single-stack (8-round) magazine, real wood grips, very serviceable firearm with a legendary, cult-like following. Overall, it could serve you well for many years.

Correction in Link

The Model 39 was actually designed by Joseph Norman, at the direction of Carl Hellstrom. Mr. Hellstrom didn't design it as the link said he did. Joe Norman also designed the Model 52 and Model 59.

Hope this helps.
