I have a Model 39-2 that the decocker in inop. It won't move to drop the hammer. I can see slight movement when I wiggle the decocker lever. I had read about sear release levers causing this and took the slide off but even with the slide removed from the firearm the decocker won't budge. I see a spring loaded plunger on the slide but not sure how it functions to allow the decocker to rotate to block the firing pin. I have pushed down on the slide to see it wear is keeping the decocker from functioning but it has no effect.

Hello cj, try this. Did you get the slide off the frame? If so, take a punch
and push the firing pin fwd. Any luck? If, so you can remove the de-cocker.
Check back. Mike

Welcome to the Forum, cjssr!

If your manual safety will NOT rotate (even when the slide is off the frame) it is not a problem that replacing the sear release lever will fix.

Unless the firing pin is frozen in an intermediate position (this can be verified by either observing the firing pin protruding through the breech face and/or pushing the firing pin forward with a punch from the rear of the slide and seeing it come back to rest), the only thing resisting movement of the manual safety is the plunger and detent on the slide and safety.

The plunger and spring are small and can not be seen with the slide on or off.

A stuck firing pin is unlikely.

A stuck safety plunger is a more likely suspect.

Try flooding both sides of the safety body with some light or penetrating oil, letting it soak for at least an hour, and then manipulating the safety lever up and down until the plunger unsticks.

Agree with JohnHL. WD-40 is not penetrating oil so do not use that stuff. Get something like PB Blaster or Kroil.
WD-40 dries out and leaves a gunk. May be what caused the problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try those asap and report back!

Decocker removal 39-2

Well I soaked the decocker in PB Blaster for a few days. Then pushed the firing pin all the way forward and held it with a hemostat. I can wiggle the decocker lever up and down maybe a 1/16 of a inch and the decocker assembly side to side a little in the slide but it still won't rotate. I have watched decocker removal videos for later generation decocker with ambi- levers and see the spring and pin on each side of the decocker assembly on those. Not sure how to proceed and don't want to break the lever. Will removing the rear site give me access to the detent spings and pins for the decocker or are they recessed in the slide itself? Something is preventing rotation of the decocker but not sure what. Can someone give me the correct instructions to remove the decocker from the slide on this earlier model? Mike mentioned smacking it with a wooden hammer but where did he mean to hit it? I don't want to break anything off!

Question

When you push the firing pin forward can you see it protruding through the hole in the slide?

Normally only two things prevent the manual safety from turning. The firing pin or the plunger on the right.

Now tell us does the fp protrude out of the slide at the breech face when you push it forward?

I'll wait :)

Thanks for that link. With it and a exploded parts view of the Model 39 I was able to finally get the decocker out of the slide. Now I am soaking the slide in a gallon bag with PB Blaster in it to free up that detent ball and spring that is stuck in the slide frame. I was worried about capturing it when I removed the decocker but it was stuck in the slide frame.
