Bought a model 39-2 a while back that some rocket surgeon cut the hammer spur off (/gasp). In my mind that borders on blasphemy, BUT it was his gun to do with as he wished. SO, now I realize I want to replace this hack job hammer with one that still has the spur on it.

1) Are model 39 and model 39-2 hammers interchangeable?
2) Can an average gun owner (ok maybe below lol) handle said gunsmithing task?
3) What should I expect to pay for one, IF I can find one intact?

Take it to a gunsmith my friend. Many will disagree with me, but one thing an unqualified person shouldn't work on is the action. I've fixed many a butchering. Let the professionals handle it!

I agree. When you receive the parts, take them to someone who knows what they`re doing!

I have to disagree. I'm a real mechanical klutz. However I followed the Model 39 instruction sheet on detail stripping and had no problem with disasembly or reassembly. Over the years I've done it a few times and had no problems. Remember "when all else fails, read the instructions".

I guess I should clarify. I myself have swapped out at least a half-dozen hammer and strut assemblies on my 3rd gens with no problems. Not very difficult. What is harder to ascertain is the fit and function of the new parts to the old. For that, I recommend a qualified individual check it over before you head to the range. Just my 2 cents...
