A couple of weeks ago I traded my HK and Berreta 9mms for a nickel Model 29-2 in absolute great shape. So I began my search for a replacemet 9mm. Keeping in the spirit of my new found pastime of acquiring handguns I came upon this 39-2 that I may add to the collection. Not knowing anything about this model I thought I would inquire of the brain trust here.

I really want a Browning HP but I am not quite ready to drop the kind of cash that they are going for.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have one and love it! A Smith 39 is a fine shooting handgun and you won't go wrong in picking one up! ;)
Those are my thoughts on the subject! :)

39-2`s are nice pistols. A lot of fun to shoot and good looking. You will love it. I`ve had a few and always enjoyed them. Seems like their value is increasing lately too.

Thank you, I am going to meet up with the seller to more closely inspect it. He is asking, what I think is a fair price, the princely sum of 425 dollars.

would pay that much, but it would have to be in super condition. One of the prettiest pistols Smith produced. Feels great in the hand.

BTW, your Browning idea's not too shabby either!

I would love a Browning and may just defer on this one if like you say it is not in super condition. Only one photo initially provided by the seller so an in person inspection required. I will report back.

I have a nickel 39-2 in beautiful shape that always gets noticed at the range and, yes, it is very ergonomic! That and my 5906 are easy to aim and shoot.

In 1977 I wanted to buy a Browning Hi Power, but couldn't afford it. So I purchased a 39-2 and owned it until 2013. Nice gun, never failed me, and had a nice out of the box trigger. I never really bonded with it though, due to the feel of it in my hand. Some loved it, but it had a somewhat chunky grip. I finally bought a Hi Power and absolutely love the feel of it in my hand, after I put some Spegel brand grips on it. I suggest you attend a gun show and try to find both guns and see how they feel for you. Either way, you can't go wrong. Both weapons are tried and true. Good luck. See pics of both below...

I had a Browning Hi-Power and sold it (stupid thing to do). I now have a 39-2, (from 1976) and love it. I've never had any problems with it. The Browning, was ammo sensitive, the 39-2 will fire anything I put in it, no matter what. I think it's a better gun over all than the Browning. Of course the Browning has the history, but the 39-2 is'n without it's own history. It was designed to be a possible replacement for the Colt 1911 in the 1954 trials. The trials never happened so S&W offered it to the public in 1955. Since 9mm pistols were not very popular in the 1950' and 60's it was somewhat "invisible" on the market. In Viet Nam I saw some being carried by officers and one variation, the "Hush Puppy" was used to silence guard dogs and other sentries. It was the side arm of the Navy Seals at that time, so it was no slouch. It's also the "grandfather" of all the metal frame S&W semi-autos.
It's a sweet shooter, accurate and dependable. You're going to like it.

39-2s are great to shoot. Mine doesn't particularly like my reloads, however. It tends to lock up. I have been considering getting a push-through sizing die to see if it fixes the problem. The problem goes away with factory 9x19 ammo, so it's certainly my reloads (which function flawlessly in all other 9mm pistols). It could be that the 39-2 is just a little tighter in the chamber than most pistols. My Beretta 92F eats the same reloads without a problem.

I just make sure I have factory ammo when I take the 39-2 to the range. 9mm is pretty cheap. :)

Well I went to check out the 39-2 and I really liked it, but there was some wear on the frame up front and as much as I liked the ergonomics the trigger guard was a bit small for my fat index finger for it to fit in with real ease......so I passed. Along the way I picked up a Python Trooper in excellent condition at the outdoor man store that we met up at. Went in to pick up some ammo figuring I saved myself a few hundred bucks passing on the 9mm and instead walked out with the Trooper. I snagged that for 600 bucks plus tax. Not sure why it was so inexpensive because this outdoor mens store really has jacked up prices in their gun library. I also met up with another guy selling a 624 with a serial number outside the recall range and I picked that one up too. We settled on what I thought was a fair price for 550.
My name is Mark and I am an addict........pictures to follow a bit later.
