How common (rather, how rare) are the dust covers for the 39? Was it an ordered option, or did a certain number of the early guns just come with them?

Hello Dr. kmd, I have a few NIB 39s that came with the cover. From the factory? not a clue. I have been told that dealers threw them away because they scratched the slide. They were listed in the early parts list so I assume you could order them. But my question, why would you need one?

Well, it's not exactly that I need one. I just recently heard about them, and was interested in the whole story.

Looks...horrific. Other than collectors value, I think I will pass.

But then, no one asked me.

I'm used to it....

The guns from that timeframe are commonly encountered but the dust shields are not. That leads me to speculate that they did not ship with the pistols but were available by special order. The same may be true of the military magazines.

Interesting; they make a cover to keep dirt out of the gun, but cut large holes in the mags to let dirt in.

Hello Dr., dont attempt to apply logic in this particular situation.
There existed a marketing and engineering dept trying to make the mod-39
as appealing as they could to our armed forces. This program at S&W
started after WW2. They had a lot of time and more importantly money
invested in the 9MM DA. I see your point, but dont think about it to much.

No...you are most certainly correct. And I would love to have one for my 39...but, I can't imagine using one for any practical purpose.

Quite a rare piece, I would think.
