Hey guys, I'm new to the firearms community and have a few questions. I've been trolling your forum and have gotten some great information regarding my new (to me) Model 39 9mm S&W.

I have been reading a lot about the extractor breaking on the non dash 2 models. Well I was at the range this weekend and my model 39 extractor broke. I can't take the gun from the range (going through 10 day waiting period on the purchase) so I can't have a gunsmith look at it yet. They don't do work on guns at the range/retail store near me. I wanted to order the part so when I can pick up the gun (wed. the 15th) I can get it fixed ASAP but I'm not sure which part it is. How easy is it to put this part on?

Help this newbie please!!!

May I ask then what this part is? Is this not the correct part?

Extractor, Old Style, NI

I'm pretty sure the part you want is their part number 321160 it is an external extractor. I don't have a clue what the one in the photo at the top of the page is.

Try the link I gave you and go to page two. It will show just the parts for a model 39 that you need.

This is my first gun and I'm sure you have experience that I don't have but from what I've read since my Model 39 is not a 39-2 it has the old long extractor... I think (and my thoughts don't mean much since I'm just learning) the extractor you have referred to is the 39-2 extractor... can anyone else chime in?

I don't want to order the wrong one. I called them and they can't tell me which one it is since they don't have the gun in front of them...

Which one does it look like, the one in the photo at the top of the page from your link? If so you probably need the one marked 359790A. The only way to be sure is to post a photo of your extractor. Sorry for the confusion but I thought you had a newer gun. If I'm wrong a guru will correct me soon I'm sure.

It is an older gun, the blue S&W box has a date of April 15th 1955 on the inside of the cover. I'm assuming that's the manufacture date...

Here's the problem that I have right now and the reason I started the thread, I don't have the gun or the extractor. The gun is in "lock up" for the 10 day CA waiting period, I get it back Wed (12/15). I went and shot it this weekend and it jammed, I took it to the front desk since I couldn't clear the jam without a tool to get the stuck casing out of the chamber. The guy at the desk said "your gun is broken, you're missing a part, it doesn't have an extractor on it." I don't know if it came off when I fired it and ended up somewhere on the range (that's my guess) but I have no idea what it looks like. I wanted to order the part and get it so when I pick up the gun on Wed. I can start to work on it and go shooting this weekend, as I am now completely addicted!!!

Alrighty then, you have an original 39 that needs the long extactor. They did have a tendency to break, which is why Smith redesigned the unit in following 39 updates. Hope this helps! Dale

Gunpartscorp lists the old-style long extractor for the 39. Don't know if they're in stock. I shoud order one, as I often shoot my 39 'no dash'.

There was a modified extractor available for the 39-nothing which changed the long extractor to a 2 piece extractor. It fixed the problem with the breaking long extractor. If you can find a S&W armorer they might be able to fix you up. Or see what S&W says.
You can see the modified extractor on my 39-0. It was one of the early 39s that my dept issued. Most of ours were modified with the 2 piece long. Kind of had the best of both worlds with the modified older extractor - had the more reliable operation of the 39-2 type extractor but the larger size extractor of the early 39-0.
