I am going to throw something out here for advice and/or comments. I have a nice circa 1972 Model 60. Great shooter but I fire it only double action. I have considered buying a bobbed hammer for it because I don't want to cut the spur off the original in case I want to return the piece to original condition. Has anyone ever heard of putting a Model 40 or 42 Centennial (old style hammer nose firing pin) spurless hammer into a Model 36 or Model 60? Now I realize the Model 40/42 does not use a hammer block. I wonder if I could put a Model 40/42 hammer into a regular Chief frame and still install a hammer block for extra safety purposes? Any response it much appreciated.

I saw one at a gun show a good many years ago.
The seller said that was the configuration then carried by NYPD policewomen.
But who knows what S&W might have done for NYPD or whether his still had the hammer block.
I think it would be safer to get a regular J hammer and cut the spur off.

"in case I want to return the piece to original condition"

I see this all the time, but I don't know anybody who has turned around and put the old parts back in a gun.

It will work but look really strange. The factory made spurless flash chrome J frame hammers and installing one sounds like a good idea.

This the Bodyguard Models 38 and 49 hammer in a Chief:
