Firstly, I love My J Frame Smiths and carry them, Swapping out which I carry from time to time,,,
BUT
I have this absolutely MINT model 40 from 1971 which I just cant carry because of the fine condition, It still has the grip pin in it.
I am thinking of selling or trading it off, Just dont want it to be a safe queen.
I was offered a Model 60-? No lock, in 357 for it and cant seem to be OKAY with that trade.
I looked on GB to get an idea of it's worth and cant find one like it.
What $ should I place on it?
I DO NOT have box or tools with it, Just as you see it. It Appears unfired and absolutely MINT Nickel finish.
I would trade for a 547, But they seem to be impossible to find, So I am not being optomistic on that one.
What do you all think?
I am sorry to ask about value here,,, But this IS the place to ask!

Or am I just plain NUTS for even thinking of parting with it?

I think your M40 would sell for about $500.

I have no idea of the monetary value of the gun you are looking at.

I really like that nickel 40, BTW.

Considering new Mod 40-1s are selling for over $500, I'd say this one is worth about $600.00-$650.00 without box, access. or papers. If it was an earlier original run, it would be worth a little more.
I don't agree with the member said that original run Centennials are worth a little less since S&W started making the "new Classic Mod 40-1" I read this in another post recently - no offense meant here.....
Nickle Mod 40s and Mod 42s are harder to find than the blued versions. Yours is in very nice condition from what the pic shows.

Good luck.

I am going through the same thing myself.
I have a model 15 unfired and its worth about $500 and thats not a lot of money when it comes to a collectible gun. I am leaning toward taking it to the range and having fun. Don

Depending on where you live...$500-$600 is where it should be.

Mine is in mint condition. I also thought about not carrying it. What the hell we only go 'round once. Carry it all the time now. Good luck.

Just out of curiosity, what is the "normal" difference between Blued or Nickle? If a blue Mod 40 in the same S/N range and same condition would it be worth much less? ($50 spread, $100 spread?)

Serious collectors say that on most models nickel is a push. They are less common, but also generally less popular. A few guns are very rare in nickel and of course it adds value in those cases.

New Model 40 Classics are all over the 'net in the $625 to $750 range but nice vintage examples don't seem to come along very often. The last 40 I saw on one of the auction sites was a LNIB blued version that fetched the $530 "buy it now" in a heartbeat...

That's a sweet Model 40 pred
I wouldn't trade a 547 for it..
Would think that would be worth as others have said $550-$650 maybe more??
I traded my Pre40 #248 for a Colt Gold Cup National Match & still wish I had that Centennial back, You'll regret selling the M40.
I know there's much better carry Centennials that are lighter & don't have the sqeeze safety
Good Luck!!
