Hi!

I have a model 41 and by judging from the serial number (A115***) it is from 1970. The problem I have is that my front sight is loose. Pushing it forward seems to fasten it and if pushed back it can be tilted. Does anyone know how the front sight is mounted on the barrel? It is a 5" barrel with a black front sight which I presume is original.

Please post a pictur of the top view of your barrel. It is possible that you have an extended front sight 5 1/2" heavy barrel, and the set screws that hold the sight rail are loose. This would help identify your barrel and possibly why the front sight is loose.
Afaik the front undercut Patridge front sight on the model 41 is integrally forged with the barrel so there should Not be movement or looseness.

Welcome to the forum! Photos would be very helpful and we like looking at S&W firearms!

I believe that T44spl is on the right path. They did actually make a 5.5" heavy barrel that had a sliding or extended front sight. You could pull the sight itself out a few inches if you wanted a longer sighting plane. Personally I never cared for that concept as there are a few negatives in doing that as far as I am concerned.

Other than that, I am unaware of ant M41 front sights that are not integral with the barrel.

It seems like when pushed back a little you can loosen it upwards. But I haven't used any force pulling it upwards so that I don't break any thing. I had it for probably close to 20 years now and really enjoy shooting it. I managed to get a Wolff spring set and I have a Volquartsen ejector laying around but haven't changed it since it ejects flawlessly when clean and using CCI SV. I live in Sweden so getting stuff for this gun is a real hassle especially since I am looking for new barrel.

That does not look like an extendable sight. If it was mine I would probably put a drop of Locktite in there and push it into place.

Others with more experience will chime in and possibly disagree.

Don't do anything (glue / loktite) just yet ... someone will be along who knows what the sight is and how it operates.

It could have replaceable front sight ... mine is fixed and milled into the slide ... no movement or replacement with that bad boy .

Welcome to the Forum from Baton Rouge , Louisiana !

Thanks for the welcoming from all. Lots of interesting stuff on here. Yeah I will wait and see what input follows here since I have no rush. I noticed when a friend shot it for the first time that the sight looked strange and he missed the target completely. The looseness of the sight also might explain that I have had some accuracy trouble with it lately.

Baton Rouge seems nice. Always wanted to go to Louisiana but haven't gotten there yet.
