I picked up a couple of Model 41's serial number 45xxx and 46xxx that are still mechanically sound and shoot well, but they are well worn.

I was planning on selling one and keeping one.

Now, I have heard about people refinishing old guns and destroying the value, so I won't be trying any home-brew duracoat jobs. (grin)

But I was wondering, do you think sending it into S&W for a factory re-finish before putting it up for sale would help or hurt its' value?

IMHO if your going to refinish for your own use and enjoyment on a gun you plan to keep for a while , then go for it. However, to spend significant $ and negitively effect collectors value on a soon to be for sale gun, i'd say is not a wise investment. ( At least try to sell "as is" first.)

I agree. Though I never understood why original blue was so important for collectors. But that's the way it is. Some gunsmiths can provide better finishes than the original. I just bought a NIB gun and the slide was scratched so bad from shipping, I returned it. The next one, though much better, also had a couple hairline scratches. I prefer a less that perfect used gun, because at least I know what I'm getting and the price is right.

Anyway, I am looking for shooter 41, so shoot me an email or PM when you come up with plan and figure.

I only buy shooters also if you are still interested put me second in line and maybe send some photo's. I would be interested in one.

Well, If you wish to refinish let Smith and Wesson do it if they still provide this services.

They are the ones that made the pistol and I have heard that they will do an excellent job of refinishing and will not depricate the value
of your firearm.

The price I believe is comparable with other refinishing services.

And while they have it for finishing, they can recondition it and replace and potential worn or out of spec parts. If you plan to sell, let the next guy worry about it, you will not recoup the refinish/refurbish costs.
