Model 41 recoil spring

I think it may be time to replace the recoil spring in my 60 year old 41. I'd like an OEM S&W spring, but I don't see them listed on the S&W website. I don't care for the Wolf spring as it is only finished on one end. Brownell lists an OEM spring for $3.99. Is it really OEM? Where can I get a real, OEM S&W spring? Should I replace anything else? The gun seems to work fine.

Last time I replaced mine I got the replacement Spring from S&W. Brownell's or Midway might sell S&W Factory Springs as well.

You can also get replacement Springs from Wolff Springs, HOWEVER, despite what their own instructions may or may not say on the package, MAKE SURE THE OPENED END OF THE SPRING FACES REARWARD!!!!!!! They had the incorrect instruction printed on the packaging for a long time and were causing guns to jam up tighter than a clam! This actually happened to two of my friends and it screwed up their M41's!

If the spring is installed with the open end forward, it can and most likely will work it's way through the plunger hole and jam up the gun.

AGAIN, open end rearward (opposite a1911's spring)!

All that said, they might have corrected the instructions by now - assuming you get a newly packaged one. I spoke to the owner about this and suggested he finish BOTH ends of the spiring with closed loops (then orientation would not matter), but he said that was not something they were willing to do. Wether that has changed or not i am unaware.

NOTE: S&W 7.5 pound Factory Springs are finished on both sides - orientation does not matter.

Wolff would also be a viable source for the spring.

Just call Smith & Wesson customer service. The part number for the spring is 066820000 and the parts catalog price shows 51 cents. So it might have gone up to $1. I ordered a dozen different springs a couple of weeks ago and delivery of in stock items took 8 days from phone call to mail box. They back-ordered a few items and they will show up in my mail box when they become in-stock items. Parts from S&W are usually about 1/3 to 1/2 of what most others charge for the same part.

I second the advice to call S&W and order. You might have to wait if it is not in stock so be patient and buy extras. They are cheap.

I just called S&W, she asked for my address and it showed up about a week later. This was about two months ago.

Chief38 and I discussed the issue with Wolff Springs instructions some time back. I scanned their packaging and made some annotations for myself just in case I have a senior moment sometime when disassembling my Model 41 for cleaning or spring replacement. See photos below

Guys, I have a brand new set of Wolf springs and two new recoil buffers from Black Jack buffers. I'm willing to let them go cheap. PM if interested. I "returned" my m41 to SW for refund after a year of struggle to have it repaired, so I have no use for these parts. Thanks
