Good afternoon all. I sent an email to Volquartsen today asking if they had any of the extractors which they stopped making in stock. Scott sent me a reply back stating that they did NOT have any inventory left, but are considering making another run. I told him that the 41 community would probably be happy to hear that and if he did decide to do so to let me know so I could post the news here. Then I thought that many voices are better than one, so if any of you are interested in obtaining these again or for the first time, it wouldn't hurt if you contacted customer service at Volquartsen letting Scott know there is a market for the product. I believe that it will help if there truly is an interest in getting these quality parts again. :)

I never understood the decision to stop producing these (or any part really) these parts but vital parts.

They have the machines.
They have the machining details etc.

What could it possibly cost to churn out a couple of hundred every now and then ?

It might be the potential profit from a couple of hundred $10 parts is less than the cost to setup the machine. As I recall these EDM parts so its not like they are forged but there is probably still a cost involved with setting up the machines.

Worst case example of this was a defense contractor in the 80s. They were making a missile that used a threaded outer casing to connect the sections and needed a a few wrenches shaped like a sickle with a notch at the end to screw the sections together. Their contract said only forged tools could be used. So they went to a tool shop that charged them a $20,000 setup fee plus a small additional fee for each wrench. The result was a $600 wrench that still gets mentioned today whenever a politician wants to cut the defense budget.

I was a sales rep for two companies that did extensive high end medical and aerospace manufacturing and the biggest cost is always in the tooling and the setup. I believe that these may have been produced via wire EDM and that required a fixture to hold the blank and then the programming to do the actual cutting, With that being said, I'm sure they still have the fixture as well as the programming. Perhaps they made a lot of these to justify covering the setup, material and run costs, as well as any tumbling for deburring, along with final inspection and it took a lot longer to sell them than anticipated, so they may have felt it just wasn't worth the effort to set up and run again. If enough of us send emails asking for them, perhaps they will set up the run again. The part truly is a quality part and I have no problem paying even more to have a few spares on hand. I don't plan on making a safe queen out of my gun so the more I shoot it the more I would like to have spares available.

I contacted Scott a few days ago to see if they were indeed planning another production run of the Model 41 extractors. I got an email back almost immediately saying that they were in the works, and got another email today confirming that they'll be making them again and they should be available in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Thanks so much to everyone who contacted them. If you don't have one, get one for the future and support a company that supports our needs.

Please note I have absolutely NO FINANCIAL AFFILIATION with Volquartsen!

Thanks for posting this, brosky. I sent a note to Volquartsen Customer Service and asked them to put me down for three each, if they make a new run of these extractors.

The Volquartsen forged $10 Extractor has been a vital "fix" to the M41 for many years! I can't even begin to imagine how many guys I've turned on to this little tiny inexpensive part that fixed most extraction issues!! I've had one in my gun for many years now and it is still perking along - but recently became aware that they are no longer available anywhere. I called Volquartsen and spoke to a female representative about a month ago and was told there were no plans to make another run - HOWEVER I am glad to now hear there is some hope!! Let's hope they do!!

I WISH the people running the new S&W would just buy them from Volquartsen and install them new at the Factory from the get-go! Would save buyers of the new M41 a lot of headaches!!

Anyway - for what it's worth I just emailed Scott. Please keep us posted as to the availability of the Extractors.....

Thanks!

I am not surprised to hear that Volquartsen has responded. I have to admit I don't have a 41 but have built up a few Ruger Mk's and Volquartsen's parts and triggers are the best along with their service. I recently sent them a bolt and a lower to tune. I sent on a Tuesday morning and received back on FRIDAY THE SAME WEEK! They must have gotten it Thursday morning and had it back in the mail by noon with new trigger and tuned bolt! They are in Iowa and I'm in Minnesota but still...

Ordered one today. 18 dollars out the door which is a good deal. Due in about two weeks. Thanks Scott at Volquartsen!!
