I have a Model 410 that I bought new from GunBroker. The ad said "S&W 410 4" Bl., Gray SS, Black Alloy Frame". From this, I assumed that the slide was stainless. Since then, I have read that the "value series" autos had carbon steel slides and "most" of them were blued. The finish on my 410 is a very dark gray but not as dark as the black alloy frame. I kind of reminds me of "tenifer" finishes on the Glocks but maybe a little darker. It looks virtually identical to the proprietary "Melonite" finish on the M&P autos. So do I have a 410 with a Melonite finish and is the slide stainless or carbon steel?

Come on guys! Someone in here must know the answer to this or at least to one of the two questions. Do I have a Model 410 with a Melonite finish? And...is my 410 slide carbon steel or stainless?

I doubt that it is Melonite or Carbon steel, but I could always be wrong. From the description you posted it sounds like Grey Stainless Steel slide. I also tried looking through some completed auctions on Gunbroker, and found a 410 with a slightly different colored slide than the frame, and it states that the slide is blued steel and the frame is alloy. Pic is attached, without a picture of the one you purchased it would be hard to tell if they are the same or different. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Ok I guess I should have kept looking another auction I found shows a 410 with slide and frame that don't have same color. It states: "Smith & Wesson Model 410 .40S&W cal. Semi-Auto Double-Action/Single Action Pistol, 4" Barrel, Gray Matte Finish Stainless Steel Slide, Black Matte Finish Alloy Frame..." Attached pic:

I think the 410S designates the version with a stainless top end. Without the "S" I believe its carbon steel with a matte finish.

The picture that you included is a picture of the one that I bought and it's the same description (probably the same dealer). But...is it really stainless? And...what is the matte finish? Is it Melonite? Anyway...I appreciate the people in here trying. Maybe the answer is academic. The gun looks nice, shoots well and I'm in Arizona so the finish will probably outlast me. BTW: That's my 410 in my avatar.

The 410 had an alloy frame and carbon slide blued.

The 410S had an alloy frame finished in gray to match the stainless slide, finished in satin.

That is not to say that S&W did not make some two-tone Value Guns along the way. The pictured one looks to me like standard finish on ally frame and matte finish on carbon slide.

Due to the expense of Melonite, I seriously doubt they did any Value Series guns in Melonite.

plastic guide rod

I purchased a used 410 recently and I am wondering if a metal recoil spring guide rod is available somewhere. I have looked on line but no luck yet. Mine is the carbon steel version. It shoots good but I'd like to upgrade it. If any one has any advice on this matter I would be grateful.
