Model 48-4 What is it worth?

Serial number 25Kxxxx Could not find date. Dash 4 is mfg from
1977 to 1984. Trying to help widow dispose of husbands guns.
Small mark at muzzle, otherwise looks pristine. Not sure if
grips are original. No serial number inside. Thanks for any imput.

I believe that is a 6” barrel but I can see how the -4 in the description would make ya think it was a 4”. Model 48s are not as common as 17s and are coming into their own as of late. A very nice gun. Price realized will depend on how much effort you want to put into the marketing/selling tasks. Here on the forum I would guess there would be ready buyers in the $900-$1200 range.

I searched for the longest time for a 4". Within the last few months I came up with all three barrel lengths, ranging from $900 to $1200.

It has a pinned barrel, so it’s should date before 1981. I’ve never seen a case like that for a ‘70’s K frame. It appears to be an N frame mahogany presentation case that was reclined/reflocked. It also has square butt Combat stocks, which weren’t offered at that time.

The gun itself looks great! It’s probably worth about $1000.
Period correct Magna stocks would set you back around $50.
The Combat stocks should bring around $250.
The case and tools probably worth $200.
You do the math!

While nothing is ever "sure" with S&W's, I believe Chad is correct. With standard hammer and trigger the gun probably shipped with magna grips. The combats that are on it have gotten pricey on their own. The gun looks to be in very good condition without much turn line or other wear.

The presentation case not original but nice. If that package didn't, in this market, bring $1,500 minimum on GB I would be very surprised. If you do decide to sell online, make sure to get high quality pictures to show the condition.

25K and 4-number SN is from 1978. With the nice box and the gun's condition, I'd say value should be $1400 or better. The SCSW gives ANIB value as $1250, and that is a 5 year old valuation, so probably even more. Original stocks are magnas. I've got a 6" M48-4 from 1981 and gave $1000 for it two years ago, no box or accessories, but a perfect finish, and original stocks.
