I have a model 48 with a 4" barrel that has an .22LR cyl with it. Are the guns with 4" barrels pretty common with the extra cyl? Its a 48-4 the box is marked AUX.CYL. on the label along with serial number etc.

While they are harder to come by they are out there. I was lucky to stumble on one last year. No box or papers, but very clean gun with wood stocks.
Had been looking for a model 18, but the store I went into had the 48 with both cylinders. Had to buy it.

When I was looking there seemed to be more 4" guns than the one with 6" barrels. Very few that I saw had the extra lr cylinder. Since I already had a k frame Mod 18 the extra cylinder was not a big issue for me. I got the 48 in 4"and it is a lot of fun to shoot.

I bought a 48 with the 8 3/8" barrel around 1993. I had it sent back to the factory to be fitted with the 22LR aux cylinder in 1997. I already had a pre-17 at that time, but since these cylinders were still available, I just had to have the extra one on my 48.

The M48's with a spare .22LR cylinder are a relative rarity, I believe, in either barrel length. By the time I got around to having a .22LR cylinder fitted (about 1996-7) the factory had no more of the .22LR cylinders, but I got one from Jack First and the factory fitted it.

I've never been sorry. The .22LR accuracy has been quite satisfactory, and the gun keeps that cylinder on almost all the time.

Now, if I could just find a .22LR cylinder for my M53...

Many were sent back to the factory, esp. 48-4, for 22lr cylinder fitting. yours came from the factory with both...the marked box makes it very desirable.
As to a 4" vs 6", more 6" bbl. seem to be available until recently...the 4" versions just came out of the woodwork. maybe its the on-line auctions that have them popping up more often. The past few years have actually seen more 8 3/8 available than 4", the past 12 months have seen 4" everywhere.
enjoy your revolver, remember the bore diameter of the 48 is for the 22WMR and that does have an effect on the smaller 22lr.
