I have a 48 with the 8 3/8" barrel and it's nickel. The Blue Book of Gun Values shows the 48 only made in blue. Can anyone enlighten me about this?
Another question: I'm trying to find current value on my 25-30 Smiths. What is the best resource for current value? I have the Blue Book and the Standard Catalog of S&W. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Pictures would give the knowledgeable folks here an opportunity to evaluate the finish. My guess is it is a refinish but that's only a guess. As to best source for current value, probably the "sold" side of GB. At least that will give you an idea of the high side of current retail sales. Then factor in regional/local differences and you can get to a pretty good SWAG of value. Good luck, please post pictures of that nickel 48.

Probably the best gauge of current value is to watch completed auctions for similar guns. As to your nickel Model 48, if it appears to be factory original, and if your curiosity has gotten the best of you, then only a factory letter will say for sure. I'm assuming you do not have the box and did not buy the gun new... ?

Attached are photos of my 48. I don't know how to tell if the nickel is factory or not. Looks like a really nice job. What do you think?

Is the ejector star blue? Normally, a factory nickle gun will have a blue ejector star. I expect with a factory re-nickle job it would be the same.

The trigger looks hard chrome, which is curious. Should be case colored. But perhaps it's just been over polished.

I'll be selling this gun and would appreciate any opinions as to value....or maybe offers! Thanks for all the info.

The ejector star is blue and the trigger is case hardened. Just a bad photo making it look shiny. It's not polished at all. Thanks for sharing those facts with me!

That's real nice! It seems like I've seen that gun before, or one just like it. Any chance you could show us a better picture of the front sight? Thanks for the pictures! :)
