Model 48

This is my first post. I was surfing the web trying to find information on a Smith and Wesson revolver I purchased at a Gun Show on Sunday and I found this site. Hopefully, this is the place to find out the information I need.
The revolver is a S&W Model 48-4. It was manufactured in 1980 with 6" pinned barrel. It has case hardened trigger and hammer. The gentleman I bought it from bought it new. It has never been fired. He did not even cock the gun for fear of putting a ring around the cylinder. It came with original box, paperwork, and S&W tool kit unopened. At time of purchase he paid $241.00.
Could anyone give me approximate value of gun and the collectability of this revolver? Also, any other information that may be pertinent to this model revolver.

I'm not a value guy but it should be at least $500 I'd say in the condition described. But a quick look at completed auctions on GB has found stuff like yours in the $800 - $1,000 range. So as a Smith and not a high volume one it is collectible to some. Shooting it would bring the value down. If wanting something to shoot you may want to sell this one and get something else.

As for info: it is a K frame, Square butt, presume with a partridge front sight. Does it have the auxiliary .22 Rimfire cylinder and yoke? If so that would bump the value. Originally introduced 1959 as the 48, then quickly changed the screw threads on the extractor as the 48-1, then a few more typical model changes up to the 48-4 which came around in '77 and moved the gas ring to the cylinder.

The condition being what it is, $750-$800 would probably be a fair value on your gun, maybe a little more. Smith and Wesson did us all a favor when they re-introduced the gun at a high price and lower quality as compared to the original models. The gun is not that rare, but is very collectible. I have a 48-2 (TH, TT, TS) that I really enjoy. I hope you enjoy yours as well. Good luck.

I have been looking for one with 8 3/8, from what I have seen 700-800$ is the asking price on a 6".

With box, (Like new)700-800 seems to be the market. no dash,more. They are great fun to shoot, polish the chambers on the newer ones. I don't know about the modern classics.
