Happy New Year everyone. I picked up a Model 48 no dash a while ago, serial # 5K917XX. Can anyone tell me it's age? Thanks.

I didn't mean to confuse and bedazzle you Big Larry. The last two numbers are 55, hope you feel better.:D

Isn't 1974 a little late for a 48 no dash? That serial number seems high for a no dash. They should have been up to dash 3 by then. I have a -2 from 1971. Maybe these were slow sellers. My -2 should really be a -3 also.

I will try to post some pics soon.I am new to S&W revolvers, but it is certainly a no dash, however,I don't think the trigger is original.

Your info doesn't jive.
A Model 48 (no dash) dates to 1959.
A .22 Rimfire Magnum serial number 5K... dates to the mid-1970's.
Swing the cylinder open and have another look at the model number stamped in the yoke cut. Your gun with the listed serial number should be stamped "MOD 48-3".

I have a 48 with no dash that should be a -3. I don't know if SW had a bunch of no dash frames that they used up over time or if some 48's just missed the dash process.

Here is a pic of the 48. I would like to put an original trigger back on. Is it difficult to do, and where would be the best place to find one? Thanks

It sound like they didn't stamp the engineering change level on some guns, but the markings don't alter what it really is. A Model 48 (no dash) would have a four screw frame and right hand threads on the ejector rod.

If the OP's gun has a three screw frame and the forward rear sight screw is directly over the flash gap, it's a 48-2... regardless of how it's marked.

Edit:

Based on your picture, I'd say that's a 48-3.
Try running an ad for a standard trigger in the WTB classifieds.

I own a 6" Model 48 that I purchased new in 1974 with serial #5K91383. It is marked Mod-48 in the yoke cut. It was ordered with the factory fitted auxiliary cylinder for .22LR. Seems there are more than a few Model 48-3's that missed the engineering change stamp.

Yes. A quick look at the extractor rod knob says this gun has left hand threads on the rod. Definitely not a no-dash. That's in addition to the items you mentioned. This appears to be a dash 3.

I think S&W's missed stamping a lot of guns. I have a 1974 shipped M53 with no dash and it is a M53-2 for sure. It was a joke GoPats73. Big Larry

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am thinking of selling it and I don't want to mislead anyone. I will advertise it as a non stamped -3. The knowledge on this site is very impressive!!
